So just to get away from the covid shit at work, I decided to take a road trip to Denver today since I'd never travelled here. I'm staying for 5 days. Any suggestions on stuff to do? Some co-workers mentioned Estes Park. Ill go up there Monday. But I'll probably hang around town through the weekend.

My luck would see me  get drug tested by the hospital the day I returned.

I wouldnt even ask this question to avoid the first answer you got. And wait, there'll be lots more of it. Its to the point that nobody can mention Colorado without mentioning pot.

I live in Kansas City. State rules by the Nursing Board. Can result in probation, suspension or revocation of license depending on repeat positive tests etc.. Hospital system has their own policy as well.

I have no idea what you can do in a Covid world anywhere at this point, but I had a lot of fun in Denver when I went about 4 years ago.  It was part of a much bigger road trip though to the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming, but we flew into and out of Denver and spent 3 days there at the end of the trip.

When I was there, coincidentally A Taste of Colorado and Riot Fest with The Misfits reunion both just happened to be going on, so the city was really hopping and it was a lot of fun.

I started with a free (plus tip) walking tour of the city.  I can't remember the website but it should be easy to find, and it ends at the mile high mark on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol Building.  We explored the 16th Street Mall.  I love historical houses so we did the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown House tour.  We also went to Four Mile Historic Park.  The highlight for me was the tour of Mile High Stadium since I'm a Broncos fan.  There's a free tour of Coors Brewery which I thought might be interesting, but there was a 2 hour wait so we passed.  Of course there's also Rocky Mountain National Park, but we had gone to so many National Parks on that trip that I just wanted to stay in the city, but you might like that and it shouldn't be affected by Covid.  We had dinner one night at one of the best steakhouses in town, The Chophouse, which I think is right by Coors Field.  Yes, I had a pot brownie before dinner so that may have helped, but damn that was some of the best steak I've ever had.

Altitude sickness is real and my wife got a bad case with nausea.  She thought it was morning sickness since we had just found out she was pregnant, but it literally only struck the 3 days we were in Denver and she never got it again.  I also got a little light-headed one night and needed to sit down to avoid passing out.

When I was there a couple years back, I booked a half-day trip up to Lookout Mountain. We stopped at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and got to walk around for a while. That was cool. At the top of Lookout Mountain is Buffalo Bill's museum and grave. Great view looking down on the town of Golden.

But, like Rossi said, be aware of the altitude. It will sneak up on you. At Red Rocks, I walked down to the stage level from the top - and couldn't get back up without stopping halfway for a while.

One problem with altitude is you don't know if it will affect you unless you go to altitude. I would be OK at Denver's height, I start to feel breathlessness nearer 10,000 feet (which is about 65% of the oxygen you'd get at sea level).

Coca is good at altitude. In Peru I was knocking back the coca tea and leaves like an addict.

some good breweries - higher altitude might get you wrecked faster.

ride out to Morrison and go to Red Rocks - you can just walk around the ampitheater and they have a small museum backstage
Its open to the public everyday and a lot of people exercise on the steps and stuff - not sure if it is closed for COVID though

Estes Park was cool.  I got married there.

After being bumped from a flight in Denver, I was given an overnight stay at the Renaissance Hotel and a voucher for food. I remember the nightly rate posted on the door was $249 a night which was way over my tolerance to pay back in 1997. I still recall how I could run 20 steps and still not reach the windows. The voucher was enough to get me to enjoy higher priced items from the hotel restaurant menu and take in a quiet night watching people on each floor of a balcony style setup. The kind of place I imagined Bob Orton yelling at cops while naked in Fresno. Some things create their own value.
