Scoreboard looks like this coming into this question. El Olympico with the lead with Lobo hot on his trail. Previous champs Retroken and PapaVoo haven't hit the scoreboard yet.

El Olympico 10

Lobo 6

Srossi 5

Dogfacedgremlin 4

Sin 3

Carpetbeggar 2

Todays "PM" question

In late 1977 a feud broke out between then WWWF champion Superstar Billy Graham and the Samoan Chief Peter Maivia. What did Graham do to ignite this feud?

You must be specific with your answer. "He attacked him" or "he verbally abused him" does not suffice. If it was a physical attack include how/with what/etc or if a verbal attack include what Graham said to him. Or if something totally different ignited the feud.

Smashed him in the head with his ukulele and opened a gash on his forehead,
rendering Maivia unconcious.

Okay everybody got this one and there isn't any scoring left in terms of this question so I thought it would be fun to kick some of these around when that happens.

What did you think of this angle?

I really liked it. For a couple reasons. First of all, Maivia was kind of a bland guy but his interviews leading up to the big match at the Garden with Graham really are some of his best work and takes him to a whole higher level.

Graham was the perfect guy to pull it off. He was so good that you actually believed that guys like Maivia (or Tony Garea) really did have a chance at beating him. If you didn't think that way before the match he had that way of appearing so vulnerable during the match that he'd suck you in.

That's an interesting way of looking at it.  I never really saw Graham as being that vulnerable myself, especially with the huge size advantage he had over most of the mid-carders like Garea and his limited bumping ability.

Yep he looked like Superman but go watch an old Graham match and the crowds totally buy into that he is going to lose. So to me, that makes him a "great worker" although what is commonly thought of being "great work" isn't necessarily that aspect of wrestling.

I agree, a great angle. The interviews leading up to the match were fantastic, with Maivia, soft spoken and sincere in the fashion of Bruno Sammartino, talking about honor, and how he let his Samaoan people down, and he slowly built up anger and rage against the Superstar. Then Graham would come out and mock him, holding the last broken pieces of the ukelele. Great stuff.

Just to show how much times have changed ~ If they did something like this today it would be Graham who would be getting cheered afterwards.
