That has always been the rumor, but I've also heard that it was the angle with Scott Casey dumping supposed horse manure on Bobby Jaggers. I think it was actually that this was a time buy and Southwest was behind on its payments to USA and not in a position to make good on the money or pay consistently in the future.

Also, USA wasn't such a big deal back then and they probably counted on and absolutely NEEDED those cash payments. Remember that USA used to rebroadcast MSG cards as well as have WWF shows on. They also broadcast some hockey games as hockey wasn't really on any true networks back then.

Fwiw Bruce Prichard pretty much buried Joe Blanchard and Southwest Championship Wrestling on the latest edition of his podcast about the Bushwhackers. He basically said Blanchard wasn't a good promoter and that Southwest wasn't a place most wrestlers desired to go. Blanchard also supposedly filed a lawsuit for some reason against every other promoter around the country and when asked which Vince McMahon he was suing while on the stand under oath he said something to the effect of "well the old man is dead so I guess I'll sue the son".

It was the actual cowhide with the colored patches on it. I thought it looked really cheap too until I figured out what it was and I thought that it was really different compared to everybody else's straps. After I thought about it, I thought the straps looked pretty cool. The belt plates looked like somebody stamped them in their garage.

Bob Sweetan was a fat fuck, wasn't he? That's a really good angle though. Blanchard's shit-eating grin at Sweetan when the match is about to start was a touch of genius. Wondered if Sweetan would have interfered to get the title on Embry - and then challenge Embry. I'm not sure whether anyone's ever done the angle where Wrestler A agitates to get the title on a jobber because Wrestler A is the next title challenger and fancies an easy match. But by making it such a one-sided brutal squash it worked well to Blanchard's reputation; he could say that he was not a cowardly champ because THAT's what he can do to a young wrestler. And did they put Embry there because his shock of blond hair would show up the blood better?

I never liked Sweetan. Same with Buck Robley. Never got how either of them kept getting booked near the top of the card in whatever area they were in. I'm not sure I remember Tully being a face anyplace, to be honest.

That was when Hogan went to steal 'Taker's bike and it wouldn't start and the whole thing looked ridiculous.
