Is there any proof that Dick Murdoch actually served in the Marines or this is just another pro wrestling case of stolen valor?

Uh oh...are they going to "cancel" Dick Murdoch now? Oh wait, I think his heart already did the job, no kickout at 2.5

Mid-South brought back Killer Karl Kox in March of 1982 as a babyface doing the crazy ex-marine gimmick. Kox was around for about a month. Then he abruptly retired, moved to Dallas with his wife and stepson, got a regular job, and that was it for him in wrestling. I don't believe he ever had a formal farewell match nor did he ever make any one shot or short term comebacks. Bill Watts liked the gimmick and then gave it to Dick Murdoch. Murdoch and Kox were good buddies plus the latter was retiring anyway, so there was no heat on that front.

I don't recall if they'd ever mentioned Dick being an ex-marine before, but if so then it was in passing to build some background and add to the flavor of feuds with people like Skandor Akbar. It wasn't until April of 1981 that it was really pushed hard as Dick Murdoch's gimmick with him using "The Halls of Montezuma" as entrance music, wearing a marine jacket and hat, and carrying around a rucksack with a shovel he'd use as a gimmick and refer to as his intrenching tool. He'd have other things stuffed in the rucksack and one time as a sight gag he accidentally tipped it over and a six pack of Miller Lite fell out with a few cans missing.

My recollection is Mid-South is the only place he took the gimmick this extent except when he got to JCP as a babyface in the late summer and early fall of 1986. In most places during the 1980s he'd mention having been in the marines, but tended to play up the West Texas cowboy/good old boy thing instead. The marine gimmick was strictly a babyface one for Murdoch. As a heel, he'd go into angry redneck mode.

I'm sure there about about 5,000 things that would get Murdoch canceled before this.

I think he was in Marine mode as a face with his feud with The Iron Sheik and the swinging clubs.

On Baa Baa Black Sheep in the 70s, Robert Conrad used to have good scenes with Red West who played airplane mechanic Andy Micklin. I thought Micklin was a Dick Murdoch clone - with his Yosemite Sam hot temper and chomping on a cigar

He never attended West Texas State either (he was a high school dropout) but somehow always got invited to play in the alumni flag football game.

Dusty tells a story about them being in a car together, and Murdoch wouldn't admit the truth, no matter how many times Dusty questioned him. Funny as fuck because Dusty never dispelled the myth that he himself played football at West Texas.

There is another Murdoch / Dusty  car story where Murdoch didn't tell him where he was driving to. It was to a KKK rally.

Yes - at least when the two faced off in Georgia around 1982-1983. Since Murdoch beat The Iron Sheik, I didn't expect The Iron Sheik to be much of a threat to Bob Backlund's WWF title. I was wrong.
