What's behind this recent sports card bubble like the one in the 90s? Is there any chance that the market won't fall apart as badly as it did once before?

It’s an interesting phenomenon. In general, I don’t believe the printing presses are anywhere near as close to what they were between say 1987-1993. There’s less product, so I don’t think it will completely crash. The pandemic had a lot of people staying at home and turning back to old hobbies, either buying or selling, and just kind of rediscovering the hobby through EBay. The first round of stimulus checks along with nefarious unemployment payouts had extra money in pockets for people to buy stuff. There’s been a decent rotation of prospects coming up ever since 2017 with Aaron Judge mania, then 2018 was Acuna and Soto, 2019 was Pete Alonso and Yordy Alvarez, and last year was Luis Robert.

It's mostly 60% basketball and 35% football that is fueling the sales.

I think you're correct about the pandemic helping. I've been bored and watched a few wax box breaks & it got me interested in completing some sets from my childhood. I haven really pulled the trigger on it, but I bought a lot of 82 Topps that someone had for sale on the Facebooks.
