Reed came into the WWF in late '86 when they were loaded with so much talent that there was no way to give everyone enough time on tv. That said, I loved The Natural character with Slick.

I still don't know if I believe the Reed I-C Title story, even if Meltzer wrote about it. The reason I say this is because WWF aired a Steamboat vs. Reed title match on Wrestling Challenge in May. It makes little sense that they would have turned around and given Reed another shot at it a few weeks later.

I know his best work was in Mid-South, but if you get a chance, go back and watch Doom vs. Arn/Windham from Starrcade '90. Really under-the-radar great match.

He lived in Warrensburg, which is about 40 miles SE of Kansas City. Every few years his name would pop up in the local news for some criminal activity. He was still doing local indy shots in his 50's, but I hadn't seen at a local show for at least a decade.

100%
The Natural was stupid, but Doom was awesome, and his Mid-South run was great.  I never got to see the Mid-South stuff until this year, but it was gold.

A Tony Reed played RB for the Chiefs from 1977 to 1980.

And a James Reed DT in 2006 and 2007.

Butch may have had a tryout with them but he never made it to the active roster.  Would likely be impossible to find training camp rosters for the years that might fit.

Roughly what I found too. Nothing added up to any time in the NFL.
Yet it gets thrown around, even by the kiddies who man WWE's website.
Sigh.

You can search for Bruce Reed in this Central Missouri Mules yearbook:

Doesn't mean much to me, but hopefully it helps.

Me too.  I appreciate it even more now than I did back then.  On one of those early episodes of Wrestling Challenge that just got loaded up on the Network, they introduce him as "Mr. Natural, Hacksaw Butch Reed."  It may have been his Wrestling Challenge debut.

Thanks for further confirmation. Yet how many stories mention the NFL's Chiefs. Even the damn WWE post. It's ridiculous. That is not something hard to check.
Now, where are all the rodeo records? LOL

He had one of the great dropkicks in wrestling in his early years.

That must've been that very first round of tapings with Lord Alfred Hayes as ring announcer. He was fucking terrible. Gorilla was also working with Johnny V and Ernie Ladd.  Glad they switched things up by the next set.

i have always wondered about how his stay in the AWA came about. Verne didn't usually feature black wrestlers. unless it was just to kill time until he returned to Mid South.

I think he was suppose to be Jimmy Garvin's bodyguard, then plans changed or something like that. I also think the payoffs sucked.

85 AWA was still doing good business so I imagine the payoffs were still ok.

Oh yeah, Spring '85 AWA was still doing ok.
Reed was in and out though.  Without looking it up, it felt like maybe a month or two.
