If the pledge of allegiance can be tossed out of schools, the national anthem can be tossed out of sports.

I believe that is the goal of the far left. Get the middle and the right so frustrated with any controversy centered around the anthem like kneeling that the anthem is stopped from playing to avoid the kneeling.

Play it or don't play it, I'm not bothered either way.

Pretty much this. No matter what is done, played, not played. Played before the teams come onto the field. Whatever.

Some special interest group will step forward and bitch and moan that the game, or whatever sporting event that is taking place will become secondary.

The NHL is different, from other team sports anyways in that if the Habs are playing the Bruins the National Anthems of both the U.S. and Canada are played.

In any kind of International Hockey event the anthems of both countries are played prior to the game and typically the anthem of the winning team is played at the end of the game.

For Olympic events I believe(maybe I'm wrong as I haven't really watched recent Olympics, outside of hockey) that the Gold Medal Winner has their anthem played. I don't really have a problem with it at all.

But their are people out there with pathetic little lives and precious little brain matter who have a pathological need to make something out of everything and seemingly many athletes or celebrities, more so than ever have a need to make their viewpoints on everything known and often in as much of a shit disturbing way as possible.

I have bigger fish to fry. Though I haven't been fishing in a while.

We wouldn't have to listen to some of the godawful versions these sports team singers throw out there, so for that reason I would vote to gas it. Otherwise I don't care.

Obviously. Never any reason for it and it was never a thing before the propaganda of WWII and then revived as a big deal after 9/11. Mark Cuban has stopped it so now this is news for some reason. As usual, Cuban is smarter than most other people.  Other than an Olympic medal ceremony, why would we ever need this bullshit?

I was going to say that I believe that it was not always a staple ceremony at least for the NFL.  I am not sure about the other sports.   Also, what would you think if it was played or performed before the teams took the field or the court?  I thought that would be a solution.  I think it used to be that way for years.

I wonder if any fights have broken out in the stands over the national anthem. For example, guy refuses to stand for the anthem and it pisses off the guy next to him. Or guy refuses to remove his baseball cap during the anthem, etc.

Given how divided this country has become and how political even things as the national anthem have become, I think that the national anthem is just one more thing to cause division between us instead of uniting us.

I was at a Penguins-Maple Leafs game in Pittsburgh in 1994.  As a Maple Leafs fan, I had on a Leafs baseball cap, which I didn't doff during the anthem (being a know-it-all lefty at the time).  When the Leafs scored the first goal of the game, maybe 10 minutes later, I stood up to cheer and a guy sitting behind me said, "No wonder he didn't take his hat off during the anthem!"  He must have assumed I was Canadian.  I couldn't believe the hat thing was still eating at him.

Long before Kaepernick, I saw some fights over people not standing or not removing their caps during the anthem, usually started by drunks 3 deep before the first pitch.  But I'm sure it must happen all the time now.

If it eliminates all of the bellyaching about kneeling, maybe we do need to remove it.

That said, there's nothing better than the baseball opening day national anthem with a flyover or some parachutist coming in.

Military jet flyovers are another thing that I suspect may be done away with in the near future. The issue got attention a couple months ago when Troy Aikman made a comment to his broadcasting partner Joe Buck such as "That’s a lot of jet fuel just to do a little flyover. That’s your hard-earned money and your tax dollars at work.” “That stuff ain’t happenin’ with [a] Kamala-Biden ticket"

Given that military money has been pulled out of sports in recent years (for example, the military no longer sponsors NASCAR teams) and that the "military salutes" acknowledgements during the games have been criticized as recruitment tools, I expect to see flyovers and other "military-ish" ceremonies being removed from sports.  Maybe I am wrong but I don't see as many "military salutes" acknowledgements during sports broadcasts anymore. However, there are a lot of "Healthcare Heroes"-type salutes that weren't a big thing prior to COVID.
