For years and years I was never sure if there was any sort of history of wrestling in my hometown beyond graduating Paul Boesch from High School, birthing Helen Hart, and being where Stu and Helen met after Stu and other wrestlers were convinced by Boesch (who was a Long Beach lifeguard) to spend their beach time here instead of at Coney Island. Then, last week, Kurt Brown posted some results on his blog (sent to him by Fred Hornby) of Martin Karadagian in NY in 1949, including 3 in Long Beach, NY. Do you have any results from here, and if so, do you know what building was used (maybe the Long Beach Arena built for hockey), how often the town was run, and approximately when the first and last shows here were? Thanks!

I specialize in the 5 boros and Long Island and have rarely come across a Long Beach result for the early 50's, and virtually never for the CWC and WWWF years. As with all collectors, my database is FAR from complete but I can't even come up with a spot show. They used to have concerts there also in the early 70's with J. Geils and Yes playing the town but I am almost positive it wasn't at the ice rink even though if you covered the ice it would have been perfect for a concert or wrestling as it had stadium seating.

I believe that the '70s concerts would have been at the Malibu beach club in Lido Beach, which is part of the same 11561 zip code.

Hisa told me to look at his site, which has these. Any idea where/what Long Beach Stadium was? They're all Summer shows so maybe the city was only run then, which would make potential trips to the Library to look over microfilm easier.

Yeah, I've been to the Malibu quite a few times but for some reason I don't think that was the venue as they seemed to have more regional acts play there than national and international ones

Here's where the Long Beach Stadium was.

The Long Beach Stadium

On State and Harrison Sts. between Riverside and Long Beach Blvd.'s

Just west of the LB Bridge

Ah, so it's where the housing projects & MLK Center are now, which is interesting since the last wrestling here was 2 NYWC shows at the MLK Center.

Watching the NY broadcasts of the NY WWF shows from late '83, a Finkel voiceover plugs a card at the Jr. High School for 12/10/83.

I also have a date noted for a 2/22/83 Long Beach card that was advertised in the WWF's old audio voiceover promos as well.

something Journal...Island Journal or Long Beach Journal. The library has whatever the main Long Beach paper was for each period on microfilm.

Interesting. I wonder if they have other Nassau County shows from the 60's and 70's. None of the Nassau libraries that I've been to seem to carry a Newsday archive which would probably have alot of cool stuff.

Would the paper be called:

Newsday (Nassau edition) for the Nassau cards?

I do get access to that paper.  I just have not researched into it.

Sometimes the county names help me out more.   What would the county name be for the area of Long Island, NY.  Is their more than one county on Long Island.

That's the correct edition of Newsday.  I think they have Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens versions.  Nassau County includes Uniondale (Nassau Coliseum), West Hempstead (Island Garden), and Long Beach (Long Beach Stadium and Long Beach Junior High School).

Long Island is comprised officially of Nassau and Suffolk Counties (Queens County and King County AKA Brooklyn are on the same island but considered separate because they're part of New York City).

Some of the New York stuff I have found already were found in odd weekly papers.  Such as this add from a Brooklyn paper called the Coney Island times.

Thier is so so so many newspapers for the greater Brooklyn area.  All the daily and weekly papers make it so hard for research if your not from the area, like myself.
