I keep hearing about the Scientology relationship between the stars, since the death of Travolta's son. I tried the cheap way to educate myself on Scientology using wikipedia. I did not want to waste the time to do some deep research into all that crap. Can anybody provide a summary of what the scientology religion is all about? I was reading that it does deal with money. Are followers/members supposed to donate the money to invest it or what? What is the appeal other than other famous people are followers/members? Scientology markets itself as a new-agey way to self realization by targeting people with self esteem or developmental issues (Tom Cruise has severe dyslexia that caused him problems in school). People have to pay tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to graduate to the next level, hence the reason they target celebrities (also they have the most money and it gets them mainstream acceptance). In reality, it was started on a bet by L. Ron Hubbard who was a writer of bad science fiction and also most likely an undiagnosed manic depressive. Scientology's obsessive hatred of psychology stems from Hubbard's paranoia that grew more bizarre as he got older. They also have the world's top intimidation team, they even got the IRS to back down and allow them tax free status (which gave them credibility as a genuine religion) by basically blackmailing IRS agents that were investigating their shady dealing. There's been cases of people dying both directly and indirectly as a result of Scientology so it's not the wacky but harmless celebrity cult it wants to be portrayed as. |

I hear them making references to Scientologists refusing medicial treatment.Scientologists like Cruise get asked if they refuse medicine (implying Jett Travolta was not treated) but Cruise disputes this. I think the people who refuse medical treatment using medicine developed in labs, are Christian Science followers? |

Scientology may be one of the best-funded cults, but its tactics are by no means unique. |

Is there a supreme being? I mean, is there any actual worship? |

It must be a tight-lipped and influential group, because I do not remember anybody coming out and saying that they went broke by being defrauded by the scientologist theology. You usually get somebody who speaks out. Where in the hell is all this money going? I can understand that it could be going for the wealth of a few, but it seems odd that nothing is ever said or discovered about this group. I mean actors and other famous types are glamour pigs, but they all aren't that stupid. I just do not see the reward for all of this. I understand it may be cult-like but even cults usually prey on those with low self-esteem. I cannot see some of their members just falling for this following when there has been so many questions raised over the years. Last edited on Sat Jan 10th, 2009 03:12 am by Papa Voo |

Funny you should mention that, I know that is actually some highly regarded piece of music, but I only know it as Camp Granada. |

The piece is called Dance of the Hours by a one-hit opera composer named Ponchielli. I know it better as Hello Mudduh, Hello Faddah too, as a mainstay on the Dr. Demento show. |

Have any of you heard of the group Anonymous? They were fucking with the members of Scientology anonymously. The members show up at Scientology events all wreing masks and fucking with them. I'm doing a shit job explaining. I read about it in Maxim. It was a really cool article. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCbKv9yiLiQ Here's one of the links on You Tube that started it all. From that page there are more videos. |

You usually get somebody who speaks out. Years ago I learned of Scientology inadvertently. I was reading Whatever Happened to the Class of '65?. It's a great read that follows the "best and brightest" of Palisades (CA) High School Class of 1965, and sees where they are ten years later. (Side note: Michael Medved-the conservative movie critic-is a featured part of this book.) So, anyhow-the kid who was the "Class Brain", and as of the writing of the book (1975) was living as a hermit in the California Mountains, went into his life story. he became a member of the Church of Scientology and was able to move quite high in the ranks. When he finally realized what this cult does, he quit. he relates stories of having to relocate and go into hiding because the church elders started to pursue him to try and make him return to the church, and pay penance. I read the book in 1979. At that time, Scientology sounded like some wacky cult. The fact that it has grown so much is a frightening thing to ponder. |

Scientologists are the most litigious group around today. It's very hard to speak out against them because they have so much money and so many excellent lawyers that they can easily bankrupt anyone that tries in legal battles. Even the media have been scared away because a few outlets have lost major slander and libel cases. |

I think scientology appeals to Hollywood for a number of reasons. The biggest one is that it preaches that the individual is most important, great for for ego maniacs. There really isnt a strict higher being or social code to be beholden too. Which is great for people who want act or behave immorally. I recognize morality is subjective. In most religons, morality is pretty much laid out, though subject to some interpreation. It is very exclusive, requrring a lot of money to achieve rank or knowledge, another plus for ego maniacs. Hell even their spirtial contract is a legit legal contract with non-disclosure riders. Basically it is everything that the "religion of Abraham" is not. |

I believe L.Ron was on the record as saying the best way to get fabulously wealthy was to start a religion. So he did. I'm paraphrasing there, but something like that went down. |

I only read some things about the religion so I am no expect but this is the most screwed up scam passing for a religion that there is. They would be better off praying to golden calves. Why don't those crazy right wing whackos protest in front of Tom cruise's movies and say he will burn in hell. |

Because whackos probably can relate to each other. No reason to bust each other's scams up, honor among thieves and all that. |
