Hey Claw I am wondering if there is much of this type of thing out there.

An example would be Stan Hansen defending the AWA belt even though he had been stripped of it. Antonio Inoki defending the WWWF belt even though he wasn't recognized as an official champion until many years later. Tag champs that defended the belts and then were never officially recognized as champions.

I believe with the 1990s WCW-Disney tapings there was a team that defended the tag title before they had even won it. I forget who though.

I think Harlem Heat and the Nasty Boys both did this.  It was common at WWF TV tapings too.

Didnt the Warrior defend the IC title against the Honky Tonk man before winning it. Or maybe did a interview as champion before the title change.

Didn't Disco Inferno both win and lose the WCW tag title without being in either match?  He was replaced through injury on the Dancing Fools by Hugh Morrus and Elix Skipper for the win & loss.  Steven Regal was also a Hollywood Blond when they lost the tag titles after Austin was injured.

I think The Freebirds may have lost the belts before they ever won them at one point it was that screwed up.

November 1972

The Crusher and The Bruiser come to Japan as the WWA Tag Champs even though they no longer held the belt in the U.S.

That's taken from the Crusher Record Book published by George Lentz.

Fred Blassie was WWA Champion in Georgia after he lost the belt in Los Angeles.

Fred was billed as Pacific Coast & West Coast Champion in the WWWF during a feud with Bruno in 1964.

Dick The Bruiser lost the WWA strap in Los Angeles but continued to be recognized in his own promotion.

Due to a live Clash of Champions in the middle of a set of TV tapings, the Freebirds lost the WCW tag belts a week or so before winning them so it ended up they had a title reign of like -4 days or something like that.

What about the Vachons losing the AWA tag titles in Portland before going to Japan? I assume the "defended" or were recognized as the AWA champs in Japan when they were there.

Vachons got it back as soon as they returned to the U.S. IIRC. No recognition of the drop in the U.S. at all for that one.
