27 years ago today. As a WWWF fan I had no clue this match was even happening. Found out it happened after the fact in an Apter mag. Which makes sense I guess (no need to promo the match to WWWF-Philly fans) Never got mentioned before or after the fact on WWWF TV. By today's standards an odd way to promote the match. This match and the Rich-Sawyer "Last Battle Of Atlanta" must be the most highly sought after video footage ever. Where you were living -- did you know this match was taking place prior to it happening? And if so -- how was it promoted? |

I was getting TBS at that time. Backlund came on the WCW set with Flair and did a promo about the match. That how I knew about it. Attachment: flairbacklund.jpg (Downloaded 90 times) Last edited on Sat Jul 4th, 2009 12:34 pm by bpickering |

Is Backlund's appearances on the TBS "around" in people's collections? I've never seen it before. Would it be on the Orlando Macchia collection? I'm only half way through watching it, so if I knew that was upcoming then it would surely be a nice treat to look forward to. Also did Backlund just make the one appearance on the show? Was the appearance he did do the day of or day before the match or a week or so beforehand? Did he wrestle any other matches down that way while he was down there? |

I dont remember seeing him wrestle. I do remember reading somewhere he was on the saturday morning show then the main Saturday night show before the 4th. That was it. |

I forgot about the rest of the world having cable in 1982. In Philly the political side of things kept people that lived in Philly from having cable until years later. Backlund wrestles Gerald Finley on TBS at one point - pretty sure that was leading up to the match vs Falir at the Omni and yes the Backlund-Flair-TBS stuff does exist on video/people have it. The Omni match has never surfaced though. |

I remember seeing Backlund/Flair promo on TBS and was hoping to see the highlights the following week with Gordon Solie, it never happened. |

The Omni match has never surfaced though. The Flair - Backlund confrontation takes place on the July 3 - 1982 episode of Georgia Championship Wrestling. Solie interviews both Champions at the same time a couple of times during this show while hyping the upcoming unification match on July 4th at the Omni. During the second interview we get to see footage of Flair beating Mike Jackson from an old episode of GCW and also highlights of Backlund winning the WWWF championship from Superstar Graham. Afterwards Flair refuses to shake Backlund's hand and just walks away from the podium. |

Good stuff. I had completely forgotten about this. Backlund's mike skills were just awful. It would have been better had he been interviewed as a cut away and not live. It sounds like he had a stuttering problem. |

srossi wrote: Were the Samoans also visiting from the WWF or were they not there at that moment? The Samoans were part of the GCW roster at this time. They were managed by Sonny King and had just dropped the National Tag Team Championships to The Fabulous Freebirds. They wrestled twice on that July 3 - 1982 episode of GCW. I just finished up the matchlist for that show so here you go: July 3 - 1982 ( Very Good Plus VQ ) Historic show as Gordon Solie interviews NWA Champion Ric Flair and WWWF Bob Backlund about the upcoming NWA - WWWF World Title unification match at the Omni on July 4 - 1982. - Dusty Rhodes interview - Sonny King interview - The Samoans vs Mike Jackson & Randy Barber - Mr. Wrestling II & Tommy Rich interview - Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy interview - Paul Orndorff vs Carl Styles - NWA Champion Ric Flair & WWWF Champion Bob Backlund interview - Ole Anderson & Stan Hansen interview ( Don Muraco comes out rambles about " The Big White Shark " Dusty Rhodes before heading to the ring ) - Don Muraco vs Dale Veasey - Tommy Rich vs Pete Martin ( after the match Ole Anderson & Stan Hansen come out to confront Rich but Ivan Putski comes out so Anderson & Hansen back off ) - Ole Anderson & Stan Hansen interview - Tommy Rich & Ivan Putski interview - Ole Anderson & Stan Hansen vs Tom Pritchard & Joe Powell - Paul Orndorff interview ( Buzz Sawyer comes out to challenge Orndorff for the National Heavyweight Championship ) - Mr. Wrestling II vs Chick Donovan - Don Muraco interview - Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy vs Pete Martin & Dale Veasey - Sonny King interview - King asks Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy to join his stable - The Samoans vs Rick Thor & Tony Gfinnaccaro - Don Muraco interview - Dusty Rhodes interview - Don Muraco vs Randy Barber - Paul Orndorff interview - Brad Armstrong vs Chick Donovan - Bill Apter announces that Brad Armstrong has won the PWI Rookie of the Year Award - NWA Champion Ric Flair & WWWF Champion Bob Backlund interview. Videos of both Champions in action are shown - afterwards Flair refuses to shake Backlund's hand. - Masked Superstar interview and Ole Anderson interview - Tommy Rich & Ivan Putski interview - Tom Pritchard vs Mike Jackson |

WongLee wrote: Here's the card btw. Does anybody know on why They took Rich out of the Tag Match and replaced Him with Tom Pritchard ? I know They ran an " injury" angle earlier in the card involving Rich, but why bring Putski in with a build-up as Rich's partner, only to replace Him with a JTTS guy in Pitchard. I would have loved to see this card live. |

I rmember a full pictorial of the entire card in one of the Apter mags a few months after the show. FWIW Rhodes loss was due to outside interference from a masked dude...can't remember who it may have been, though. |

If so, it could've been either of them. |
