They're sure to strike while the iron is hot.  You'd think they'd rush something out for the Christmas shopping season.

Former Sony Music chairman and CEO Tommy Mottola has said Jackson left dozens of songs that included newer material and leftover works from some of his biggest albums. Mottola predicted the potential playlist was bigger than the one left behind by Elvis Presley.

They just did a souped-up version of Thriller last year. I could definitely see that being done to other albums. That, plus the un-ending chain of posthumously released new albums ala Johnny Cash and Jimmy Hendrix.

Now that he's gone away, I wish he'd just go away.

Hendrix released twice as many albums after he died than while he was alive

There's this great concept where you just don't buy the music and/or ignore the hype.

And if people will actually do this, I'll be one happy MoFo.

If the Billboard 200 listed the acutal top selling 200 albums in America and not just the top 200 new albums in America (this is to push new stuff, by the way), MJ would have two or three of the top five albums in the country right now. Can't remember where I read this, I'll hunt down a link.

He's way up there on the "Pop Catalog" list, or whatever it's called. It's the Billboard Chart for historically successful albums that keep on selling such as Dark Side of the Moon and Back in Black.

Here's a link that lists some Soundscan data. Doesn't mention the Billboard aspect, though. I'm still looking for that:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1922684/michael_jackson_album_sales_put_king.html

This NY Times article covers the bullshit Billboard rules. Also, an interesting photo of MJ rehearsing for the London gigs.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/02/arts/music/02sales.html

And this nugget is astounding (from the Times article):

Many retail stores reportedly ran out of stock over the weekend, which might have contributed to Mr. Jackson’s remarkable sales tally online: 57 percent of his album sales were digital downloads, and 2.3 million downloads of single tracks were sold, separate from album sales. In the five years that SoundScan has tracked downloads, no artist has sold more than 1 million tracks in one week. Last year Mr. Jackson sold a total of 2.8 million tracks.

This is also impressive:

Mr. Jackson will occupy the top nine spots on the catalog chart, as a solo artist or with the Jackson 5.

Has Jackson already re-released his whole catalog yet re-mixed or whatever it is they do?
It seems like every big musician/bands have done this within the last ten years. Didn't the Rolling Stones do it with all their albums?

If he hasn't then I assume they will do it before the end of the year. We'll probably see a bunch of Jackson Five stuff as well as I'm sure his brothers will want to ride the gravy train that is MJ while it is hot for the last time.

Jackson's back catalog continues to lay waste to the Billboard Top 200. Jackson has the top 12 spots on the Pop Catalog chart. Last week was the first time a Pop Catalog #1 sold more than a Top 200 #1. This past week, Jackson sold half as many albums as the entire Top 200 combined.

From Rolling Stone:

The Big News: Michael Jackson’s discography moved over 1.1 million copies last week as sales of the King of Pop’s albums continue to increase more than two weeks after his death. Like previous weeks, Jackson’s album were ineligible for the Top 200, but had they been eligible Number Ones would have topped the charts with 348,000 copies. Jackson’s stunning sales week overshadowed the great debut of Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night, which took Number One on the Top 200 with 316,000 copies sold. It was the second consecutive Number One album for Maxwell, who last released Now back in 2001.

Three other Jackson albums topped 100,000 in sales last week: Thriller with 263,000, Essential Michael Jackson with 147,000 and Off the Wall with 106,000 copies. On the Top Catalog Albums chart, Jackson’s albums, compilations and Jackson 5 collections fill the entire Top 12, and on the Top Comprehensive Chart — which maps the sales of all albums — Jackson’s catalog takes up six of the Top 10 spots. In total, the 1.1 million copies that Jackson’s catalog sold last week as more than half of the 2.1 million copies the entire Jackson-less Top 200 sold last week.
