William Regal recently ended two decades working for WWE after Triple H lost his influence over NXT and was deemed surplus to requirements. However, AEW’s Tony Khan would recognize how valuable a talent he is and decided to bring him into work both in front of the camera and backstage as soon as possible. Therefore, he would make his debut for the company at this past weekend’s Revolution pay-per-view aligning himself with Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley and then cut an emotional promo on Dynamite.

During this promo, he would remark on not having long left and said he would end up being pushed around by his wife, seemingly in a wheelchair. At the time, it was thought he was simply exaggerating his age and the fact he’d taken a lot of punishment in the ring.
Sadly though, in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has reported that Regal is genuinely dealing with serious health issues, with him opening up about this in an upcoming episode of Talk Is Jericho.

Regal mentioned about having limited time left… Apparently Regal’s health issues at this stage are far more serious than have ever come out and there is an interview that will be released next week that he did for Talk is Jericho that will detail them.
Dave Meltzer
Regal has lived a hard life due to past substance abuse issues, and his in-ring style was always going to end up with him with a broken-down body. The fact he retired from the ring in 2013 when he was still in his early 40s seemingly confirmed this. Now all fans can do is hope that when the podcast drops, it is revealed that Meltzer has overstated the severity of Regal health concerns because for a man who has given so much of his life to the business, he deserves better than to end his days in distress.

I was actually going to start a topic asking about this as it stuck with me after the promo.

Very sad to hear this but I guess not altogether surprising.

As mentioned he had very serious problems with drink and drugs for a LONG time.

He was wrestling from a very young age and there's bound to be serious wear and tear from that.

He also had a serious health scare maybe 20 years ago. I forget the details but something happened on a tour of India where he got some sort of heart infection and he had to take time off and get treatment and medication. As I recall at the time it was not known if he'd ever be able to get back into the ring at that stage. I wonder if there is long term heart problems caused by this too, adding to the rest of the stuff.

Either way it is very sad to hear if the forecast is really as bad as his promo let on. He always seems like a great guy and everyone else seems to hold him in high regard in the business. He was one of the best in-ring workers of the 90s and seems to have made a big difference as a trainer/coach to younger people starting out. And his line in that promo about helping people who wanted to work was obviously a shoot and from the heart.

I know nothing about William Regal’s health. What I am saying is purely speculation. When I saw him get in the ring before slapping Mox and Bryan, the first thing that popped into my head was that he was wearing a massive back brace.

Already…. That’s why I stay out the runour mill and gossip!!! I’ve just found out that there’s things being printed about my health. I am healthier than I’ve been in many years. I talked this week to someone about things that had happened to me in 2018.

Has Meltzer actually heard the podcast before it dropped? Seems unlikely. Let's hear what Regal says in his own words.

I took Regal's promo to be in his usual style of self-deprecation mixed with his awareness that he's lived a hard life and it will catch up to him in his older years, not that he is facing imminent death.

I kinda thought that but the way he said '65' or whatever age he said did make me wonder.

Anyway, I'm glad to see Regal's response. He looked and sounded well the other night too.

It's a pretty bad one out of Dave Meltzer too.

Did he actually say he was 65? That's older than his buddy Finley who is I think 62 or 63. While he did have a problem with those sweet sweet painkillers, I think he's been completely clean and sober for at least 20 years. I also don't think he messed with steroids. If he dies of something at this point he probably would have died whether he was a pro wrestler or an accountant.

He said he would be dead by 65.  He is 53.

I too, would have done anything to have had a body like Johnny Grunge.

I too, would have done anything to have had a body like Johnny Grunge. You don’t remember this?  Grunge died of a massive addiction to opiates and his body just gave up.  The doctor that prescribed him the pills got major heat and I think was prosecuted.  Somewhere during this, either this doctor started the anti aging clinic in Florida, or he was friendly with who did.  At this point, everybody that did business here got nailed because they ended up publishing the names.  Edge, Orton, Regal, Mysterio, Chavo, and I think a few others got suspended all at the same time.

I think he said 65 as the age that he won't make it past or that his wife will be pushing his wheelchair over to the window so he can look out.
(sorry, I see Srossi already clarified)

Regal was great tonight on Dynamite sitting in on commentary. He started it by saying, "Mr. Ross, it's always a pleasure, never a chore, to see you. I didn't get to thank you last week but you did just as much for me as Tony. Thank you very much indeed. Guy in the mask, you've done nothing for me." Regal's comedic timing is incredible, especially when he's saying something emotional and then turns on a dime.

The podcast with Regal has dropped and PWInsider says this is what Regal talked about regarding his health issues:

“But the real focus of the episode is talking about Regal's injuries and recent near-death experiences following complications after having four discs in his neck fused after realizing he actually broke his neck in 1993, winning the WCW television title from Ricky Steamboat. He also talks about a heart condition that almost led to his death and how complications from that surgery almost led to him losing his leg.”
