I'd say your assessment is spot on, except that both parties are in on the bit this time. One of the few ways left to work the audience is using social media and while this could be 100% legitimate, I think we're watching a possible masterclass in kayfabe/working. Yep, MJF is an asshole on tv. He can’t go around kissing babies and helping old ladies across the street off camera. All the smart fans think they know it all, so Tony and MJF work them all and he gets even more heat.

Wardlow completely squashed MJF so let the rumor mill continue. Not sure if MJF will continue with AEW after this, but it all could be part of the work. I don’t agree with burying him though if he’s really staying, even if that was the plan all along. Anyway, he got 10 powerbombs and a stretcher job.

Tony Khan noted during the post-show Double or Nothing Media Scrum that he would not be commenting on the MJF situation. MJF arrived at the venue for the PPV tonight at what was described to PWInsider at "the last minute" and left the venue right after his match. The expectation is that he will not be on the road at least for the next several TV tapings, possibly longer.

The crux of all this seems to be that MJF feels he is being underpaid for what he provides for AEW. If that is true, then MJF undervalued himself when the signed a 5-year contract when he joined AEW. It seems TK might have offered him a pay rise, but on the condition that MJF signed on for longer, rather than just bumping his pay for the remainder of his contract. If this story is true, then MJF just needs to suck it up and work through his contract and learn his lesson about properly valuing himself.

I’m still not convinced that all the contract talk going back a year isn’t a work all along. It’s hard to reconcile MJF being so unprofessional behind the scenes and online, but then selling the way he did last night to put Wardlow over like a million bucks.
