Just a guess but I'm probably right

3.5 years ago AEW offers a 5 year contract to an relative unknown (MJF) who didn't get hired by the WWE. MJF is happy because hey it's work in a business he wants to get into, they have a TV deal and paychecks for 5 years and the always needed 'exposure'

Halfway through the deal MJF's performance is such that he is arguably the top heel in the company. So here he is, top heel in the #2 company in the US and that pays ?????

Its really hard to say without knowing the numbers (What he makes, what he wants, what Khan offered him, what does the #1 heel in the #2 company make anyway?)

And I agree w Srossi. In terms of what 'we' see out front, total professional, etc

His heel personna is so convincing that people think he just may actually be an asshole.

I hope he isn't done in AEW, I got turned onto AEW in the past year and I genuinely look forward to his appearances.

This does seem to be the prevailing story. Tony Khan apparently did agree to pay him more money, but wanted MJF to extend his contact in return. Seems fair.

If this is all as it seems, MJF is doing himself no favors by walking out on AEW. Nick Khan's WWE will pay MJF as little as they can to get him to sign. MJF maximises his pay check by having two interested parties in a bidding war. WWE can lowball him if they are the only bidders, and throw in some trademark Vince McMahon promises.

Fans take personal offense to getting worked today. It’s so silly. We don’t know anything. For all we know, MJF and Tony Khan had some intense contract negotiations, came to a deal on an extension, and everything the past 6 months have been a work. MJF gas always been incredibly protective of his gimmick even on the indy scene. He rarely breaks character. If anyone was going to do this, he would be him. And if anyone would be into playing along, it would be TK who is a huge mark for the Pillman/Kaufman stuff. I just don’t buy that MJF is no-showing a meet and greet because he’s upset with his contract, but then shows up at the PPV (last minute of course even though they never shopped advertising the match) and then sells like no one has ever sold before to get Wardlow over exactly as the angle was always meant to end. Now he’s done a stretcher job to write him off TV for a few months and anticipation will build to his future and he’ll make a surprise return and pop everyone again. MJF only wrestles a few times a year as it is because they protect his character so much, so a hiatus is exactly in line with that.

He may as well finish the last year and a half on his contract at whatever and he’ll get paid well by somebody in 2024

The caveat being we have no idea what WWE will look like in 2024 or if they’ll be signing anyone, even to misuse and bury. Vince might not still be there.

PWInsider:

MJF arrived at the building for AEW Double or Nothing while the Buy In was on the air and was sequestered into a room. We are told this happened so quickly and quietly that most of the locker room had no idea whether he was there or not and even when his music hit, MJF was not in the gorilla position. That led to some who knew he was there worried for a second that he had walked but then MJF showed up and went to the ring. He left the building immediately after being stretchered out of the arena and did not remain for the rest of the show. He was seen exiting the venue with AEW Producer Pat Buck.

MJF is still in Vegas as of this writing, as is AEW management, so any assumptions or story that he flew home after the PPV or today would be incorrect. There were some talents upset with him over the situation. The belief among those we've spoken to today is that while there was some sort of agreement made to get through Double or Nothing, nothing has been resolved regarding the core issues between the two sides. We are told they are more likely to sit down and try and work something now than they were a few days ago. So, there is at least a chance the ice is thawing.

AEW talents and management are slated to head to Los Angeles tomorrow in advance of the LA debut at the Forum for Dynamite this Wednesday.

Cliff Compton and former WWE and ECW Exec Lou D'Angeli were at the show visiting as they are from Las Vegas and extremely close with CM Punk.

The same company that designed and produced the Crockett Cup for Jim Crockett Promotions built the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Cup.

Several Impractical Jokers cast members were backstage at the show.

MJF has just been announced as appearing on Dynamite tonight. While I'm sure that will drive some ratings, he really should be selling his stretcher job.

I'm sure he'll be wearing a neck brace or in a wheelchair or something.  This whole thing is so obviously a work to me though.  He'll make some inside shoot-y comments  and WWE fans will insist that AEW is imploding from within even as they insist that Sasha didn't really walk out for the 2nd time.

Dumb question

Is it possible anywhere to find out what a wrestler makes?

I would like to compare MJF's $ to a couple free agent signings (Adam Cole & Mark Henry) and see how he stacks up. MJF is better than both but I'm curious as to how he stacks up vs 'these big free agent signings'

According to Meltzer, guys like Henry and Wight are making more than 5 times what MJF makes, and even Malakai Black was signed to a much larger deal. Of course that’s because MJF was in a mid-card heel stable in MLW when he was signed and had zero name recognition, so why would he get a big deal?  He could’ve been a bust like Nyla Rose or Peter Avalon or anyone else they pushed early.

How does the organization have money for Cole/Henry/Wight but not MJF?

I realize in companies there are inequities everywhere but what is an employee to do when its ridiculously lopsided?

They have money for him and have tried to sign him to an extension at a much higher salary. He’s not interested in the extension because he wants to play the free agent market. He just wants to renegotiate his current contract. At least that’s the story of it’s not all a work. Part of me thinks he signed the extension 2 months ago.

It's been funny listening to all the wrestling "journalists" and podcasters fantasy booking this MJF angle, although they call it predictions. They come up with what will probably, or even obviously, happen and they shit all over it because they don't like it. All the TV surrounding this deal has been compelling and the promos have been exceptional. You can try and guess where this is going, but you can't then get annoyed because you don't like the sound of your guess. Even Jon Pollock and Wai Ting were doing this last night, and I normally enjoy them for being level-headed and avoiding all the speculative nonsense that others get into.

I sort of think that he's signed an extension or new deal already to but it's very hard to know.

I don't listen to many wrestling podcasts aside from Cornette and the odd other one here and there. But I agree with Kriss. If that's happening it sounds like they don't like being in the dark on anything. This angle is being done well and they could get a lot of mileage out of it. I pray they don't have MJF involved in this interim title nonsense, he has enough going on with the contract angle.

Sidenote: I listened to Cornette's review of the PPV and some of it I agree with and some I don't. But the but when they 'reviewed' the media scrum is hilarious. Tony Khan is an odd fella to say the least.
