Don't know if I like this or not, I hope he fies better than Flair, that's for certain.
Hell, I might even buy a ticket.

The only problem I have with this is about 5 years ago didn't Steamboat have a serious health scare after stepping out of the ring?

Steve Perkins' Big Time Wrestling event featuring Former NWA World Champion and WWE Hall of Famer Ricky Steamboat's return match on Sunday 11/27 in Raleigh, NC at the Dorton Arena will be streaming live on FITE.TV.

In the main event, Steamboat teams with FTR vs. Jay LethaI (as Black Machismo) & Brock Anderson & a mystery partner, managed by Arn Anderson. The event

This will be Steamboat's first official match since a 2010 bout teaming with his son Richie on a Florida Championship Wrestling event when FCW was the primary WWE developmental territory before NXT was instituted. Steamboat, one of the greatest in-ring babyfaces of all time, initially retired in September 1994 after injuring his back while wrestling Steve Austin in WCW during a Clash of Champions. He surprisingly returned to the ring as part of a storyline with Chris Jericho playing off the Mickey Rourke film The Wrestler at Wrestlemania 25, teaming with Roddy Piper and Jimmy Snuka.

Initially planned as a one-time occurence, Steamboat looked so great as a performer that he wrestled Jericho in a singles bout at Backlash 2009 and was regularly working with other talents before getting injured during an in-ring angle with The Nexus that led to his hospitalization, halting what had been a great return run. From that point on, Steamboat, now 69 years old, had not officially returned to the ring. That will all change later this month.

The BTW event will also feature:

*The Briscoes vs. The Rock N' Roll Express is in what is billed as Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson's final match of the their career in the venue.

*Matt Hardy vs. Crowbar.

*Jimmy Valiant's Boogie Woogie Jam Invitational Battle Royal.

*Also appearing are Lex Luger, Teddy Long, The Steiners, Kane and more.

Mystery opponent? I bet they want people to think that it *might* be Ric Flair. If you have anyone worth anything for this spot, you advertise them to sell more tickets.

And "final match of the their career in the venue" might be the most bullshit selling point for a match that I've ever heard.

I really wish Steamboat could've stayed away because his retirement run in WWE with Jericho was a perfect ending to a fantastic career, and he didn't embarrass himself at all. That 10-man tag on Raw was so much fun and the talent was having the time of their lives. These guys just can't stay away though. Now he'll be passing out in the ring like Flair.

Honestly, his final real run in 1994 where he had a pair of matches with Flair (with the one on WCWSN being one of the best - and most forgotten -  TV matches of the decade) was awesome and that's how I remember him.  At that point in time Steamer had come and gone so many times that you never knew how long he would stick around.  But that WWE run was so unexpected and so brilliant, it's one of the better memories of their PG era.

I remember that Flair/Steamboat match from Saturday Night in 1994, what a great match indeed. It’s one I’ve always remembered it well for having only seen it once to this day, and I had difficulties in tracking it down during a time when I was big into collecting DVDs and then hard drives full of shows.

Nick Aldis was the mystery partner. Steamboat & FTR won when they had the figure four on Lethal, Anderson & Aldis

Big Time Wrestling
“Return of the Dragon”
November 17, 2022
Dorton Arena
Raleigh, North Carolina
Commentators: Joe Dombrowski and Shane Douglas

There was a pre-show match but the sound wasn’t very good and I didn’t catch the names.

The Jimmy Valiant Boogie Jam Battle Royal: A mass entrance of nameless competitors that may have been named on the Fite PPV feed but not live in the arena surrounded the ring- Tommy Dreamer came out to a brief, but boisterous “ECW” chant. Tommy Rich came out and was ringside as Jimmy Valiant made his “Boy from New York” entrance.
Valiant started to speak to “all his brothers and sisters” when southern independent veteran Stan Lee interrupted the proceedings which lead to Valiant applying the testicular claw, a kiss, and a finger to the bum, before tossing Lee out to Tommy Rich, who drug him to back.

The other entrants including Dreamer entered the ring and began to brawl. Even Shane Douglas tried to get involved but Dreamer quickly put an end to that. Scott Steiner made his entrance and quickly began clearing the ring, quickly winning the Boogie Jam Battle Royal. Dreamer took the mic and praised Scott and Rick Steiner.

The PPV portion then began...

Matt Hardy defeated Crowbar. Crowbar looked great. There was a fair amount of action outside the ring in this one, including use of a guard rail.

NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Champion Kerry Morton defeated Brian Pillman Jr. The crowd loved Pilman and booed Morton. Even Pillman attacking Morton after the match and flipping off the crowd couldn't change their reactions.

BTW Champion Danny Miles came to the ring to complain that no one had accepted his open challenge. Guest Commissioner Teddy Long came out and said he wasn’t here to make “a tag team match, playa!”. He was here to introduce the challenger, “The Neon Ninja” Facade...

BTW Champion Danny Miles pinned Facade (with Dani Mo).

Mr. TA (not to be confused with Magnum TA) came out in the aisle way, insulted Raleigh and earned a Cobra Clutch from Sgt. Slaughter for his efforts.

The Rock N' Roll Express defeated Mark & Jay Briscoe.

Savannah Evans pinned Amber Nova.

Ricky Steamboat and FTR defeated Nick Aldis, Jay Lethal, and Brock Anderson (with Arn Anderson). Steamboat looked good here. Not good for 69, but good period. He earned a “You Still Got It” chant. Arn teased that he was the mystery partner before introducing Aldis. Steamboat and FTR applied Figure 4 leglocks to all 3 opponents for the victory. Lethal was in full “Black Machismo” persona here and it got a big reaction from the crowd. FTR praised both Steamboat and Arn after the match. Steamboat said that Raleigh held a special place in his heart because it was the first place he wrestled the World Champion and it was a 60 min draw with NWA World Champion Harley Race in 1979. Steamboat and Arn shook hands after the match.

Attendance looked to be 1,500-2,000.

Others taking part in the pre-show meet & greets that didn’t appear on the card were Kane, Magnum TA, Lex Luger, Ron Simmons, Rick Steiner, and Mr. Hughes. The longest line and consistent from 2 PM until the dark matches started around 4:30 PM was Ricky Steamboat (obviously), followed by FTR, Rock N' Roll Express, Matt Hardy and the Andersons.

Videos played throughout the evening of luminaries wishing Steamboat well including David Crockett, Ted DiBiase, Tully Blanchard, Bret Hart, Nikita Koloff, Marc Mero, Jake Roberts, Eric Bischoff (whose video was booed loudly), Earl Hebner, Barry Horowitz and others.

This went completely under the radar compared to the Flair match. Had no idea when it was until I saw the results. The small crowd might encourage any future promoter not to half-ass the promotion of something like this.

That undercard is just embarrassing, as is making the Briscoes job to the RnR Express. The only positive you could say about this is that by all accounts Steamboat looked a lot better than Flair, but this really didn’t need to happen.
