No idea why this came to me today, but anyway. Back in the late 80s, over in the UK, we used to get a NWA/JCP show shown in the wee small hours. Back then I was about 10 and wasn't at all into the history of wrestling. My question is about a best of three series between the Freebirds (Garvin & Hayes) and Steve Armstrong & Tracy Smothers (I think as The Southern Boys before they became The Young Pistols) for the Southern Tag Team Title, which was represented by a trophy. Anyone know when this happened, can't find it in any results or title histories. As for the year, no idea, it's the late 80s. Gordon Solie was commentating, and the Horsemen at the time were Flair, Arn, Windham and Vicious and were feuding with Luger. Any ideas?

Probably it's from 1991 when the US tag team titles were vacated when the Steiners won the world titles. Hayes/Garvin beat Armstrong/Smothers to win the vacant titles. I don't remember a trophy but Gordon Solie would have been commenting in WCW at the time.

That whole Southern Tag Trophy thing was invented by Hayes & Garvin to displayhow they were from the south while the Southern Boys were from Wisconsin or whatever they were saying.

Best I can tell, that aired as part of The Main Event in August 1990.

Twuz Wyoming, though originally they were billed from the south with the Southern Boys gimmick, but the new corporate peeps felt that was too "Southern" for a national promotion, so they eventually changed the name to the Young Pistols and billed them as being from Cheyenne, Wyoming... Because nothing says NATIONAL like Wyoming baby! The angle with the trophy was in 1990, I believe Bob Armstrong destroyed it, on a Clash I think...
