Saturday, April 10, 1943 Pearl Street Arena- Eugene, OR 8:30pm Matchmaker: Don Owen Pete Belcastro vs. Jack Lipscomb Pierre LaBelle vs. Bulldog Jackson Merle Peters vs. Billy McEuin GEORGE WAGNER DEFENDS PRO MAT SPORT By Buford Sommers Eugene Register-Guard- Friday, April 9, 1943 PORTLAND, Ore. April 9 (U.P.) Is wrestling an essential industry? George Wagner, Portland, Eugene and coastwise matman, will debate this issue with anybody and at catchweights. After an hour in the ring struggling with a strong man, Wagner thinks nothing of stepping over the ropes and into an empty auditorium to tackle an intellectual problem. Darkly good looking without the mangled ears that mar many of his corades in arms or the gnarked nose of the boxer. Wagner naturally defends the affirmative of this burning issue. "Wrestling turns out the best soldiers," Wagner begins, stating his major premise. "For hand-to-hand combat, you can't beat wrestling tactics." Suiting action to the word, he's got you in a quick wristlock. There's no comeback for that one. "All branches of the service teach wrestling tactics for commando use," he goes on. "Jack Dempsey has a corps of wrestlers as instructors in the navy. There are wrestlers in all branches of service." Name two, you say, to offer some show of opposition. "There's Gus Sonnenberg, Fibber McCoy, Jesse James, Joe Smolinski, Danny McShane and Billy Vargo," he says, naming six. Is a toehold better than a left jab in persona relationships with a Jap or German? "You wouldn't bother with toeholds on a battlefield," Wagner explains patiently. "You use quick deadly holds with which you can kill a man. See?" And he's got you around the neck in some kind of choking, smothering throat-crushing clutch. "Dempsey believes that, in an open match, a good wrestler will beat a good boxer every time, and Max Baer agrees with him. And I agree with them. "Hand-to-hand combat depends on all the holds and tricks used in modern wrestling, jiu-jistu, judo and anti-judo." Shouldn't wrestlers be in the war instead of in the ring? "I'll soon be in the war, if that's what you mean. I'm in 1-A now, and I've been in war industry, ship building and repair, for the last two years." Do you have to be a big guy to rassle the enemy? "It helps, but you don't have to be. A trained man can toss around a much heavier man when he knows the laws of balance and leverage." Then, quick as a fox, he's got you in a light but firm grip that has you yipping with surprise. No rebuttal.

Check-in time: Anyone getting any gems mined from this thread? I know I've probably covered some of the same ground of late as specific threads like St. Joseph. I have probably 500 more news links to sort through yet so stay tuned. I am quite sure there are a few dupes if you look closely; I am almost positive that is the case as I type them up, but I'm too lazy to pore back through and confirm it.
