How is the usability of Genealogy Bank and what papers are there? I like the ability to tailor searches at NewspaperArchive.com although the site is quite buggy. Newspapers.com is very reliable from a technical standpoint, but its advanced search isn't advanced enough for my taste.

Here is their full newspaper list: http://www.genealogybank.com/newspapers/sourcelist/full/ In some cases, you will need to double check the "Years of Coverage", as saying they have 1903-1997 at the highest level may actually mean they have 1903-1904 and 1996-1997 for that title, but not all the years inclusive. The interface is not as good as Newspapers.com, as it is not as easy to browse. The site is setup more around searching. For any given result, though, you can click a link to see all the pages from that issue, and then click through them. When using it for family research, I relied on the actual First Name/Last Name search options, but for wrestling I usually just enter a date range for the paper I want and enter something vague like "sports" in the "include these terms" box. But in general, I love them as a resource, and have been a subscriber for years, initially for family research, but now mostly for wrestling. I have found the site to be very reliable. They do have their bad days, but those are rare. Last edited on Wed May 3rd, 2017 06:21 am by DaClyde |

Quick question for the experts. Does anyone know how to get the OCR for all of the articles over at NewspaperArchive.com? Reason I ask is I was doing some searching in the Amarillo territory on Noah Jones (of all people), and came across this one for the Pecos paper... https://newspaperarchive.com/pecos-enterprise-sep-18-1978-p-6/ At the very bottom it has the OCR text, which is all I really care about. But other papers do not have that. Was this just dumb luck, or is there a way to get that across every paper. Lots of spot shows from Hereford that I'd like to get (yeah, too cheap to pay for subscription), and quite a few Del Rio cards that I can't find in Newspapers.com As always, thank you for your help!!! Just a quick update, looks like some of the other papers have it, but not all. Last edited on Thu Jun 13th, 2019 08:12 pm by cman73 |

While you might question whether it's worth it, others outside of the wrestling sphere certainly have, I've spent at least $100 a year on various newspaper archives over the past 15 years of so. I don't really have any inclination to help someone who is "too cheap" to pay for it. While any new research is always welcome, thorough research requires being able to access any newspaper, since not everything appears just with a simple search due to bad scans. OCR text is nonexistent or very bad with many of the newspapers which weren't scanned in hi-res, which has only been standard for the past 3 or 4 years. By chance I found a Spanish NYC paper (La Prensa), which might have a good number of ~1928-1938 shows, especially from the smaller Star Casino. It's hosted on Memoriademadrid.es . Not sure where the search interface it, I just used the "site: " search on google. It might even be helpful for finding out promoters, like here (June 18th 1934)![]()

Just wanted to give some props to Boxrec.com again for being a good archive for old school fighters. When I find split boxing and wrestling cards, I find that the boxers results will show up on the fighter records more readily than the wrestlers, which has helped locate a specific year if the lineup sheet or poster doesn't identify it.

I have been linking photos of various posters and lineup sheets on several threads with Worthpoint.com being the source. They archive old online auctions such as ebay for long periods, much longer than the original sites care to. Because there are visibility issues when clicking these links and giving a "Forbidden" prompt, you can apparently open Worthpoint in a separate tab and that should give you the ability to view these hyperlinks. You don't need to login or register there; you can view these old auctions but just can't see the selling prices as a guest.

Just a note to pass along a time-saving tactic I may have mentioned in one of the threads but this would be the place to put it. When I want to determine whether one of my listings is worth adding to a career record, I now go into the Clawmaster's Archives forum itself and do a search for a specific thread before opening it. You can click "Search This Forum Only" once you are in this sub-directory, which greatly reduces the number of results compared to a search from the main page. This has been most effective in dealing with these whoppers of lists like Wilbur Snyder and Dick the Bruiser. When you open the thread from a search rather than from the forum itself, it opens as one complete page. I can then locate dates or locations more easily by typing it into a "find" request; sometimes I use a name on the lineup which might be a rare search term. With only one page to search, it moves more quickly than the prospect of opening multiple pages. Just now I added a Snyder result and noticed that there are about 800 replies to that thread, and each page is only 15 replies at one time. As I scrolled down, I saw a case where Chitown Rich searched one section of pages for an update but didn't see it updated in another. I don't know if this tactic is common knowledge but I have been using it for about three months with great satisfaction.

I don't know if anyone here can take advantage of it in their given location, but I found a way to access newspapers that are behind a subscription wall by utilizing a login to a statewide consortia with my library card number and entering which location it is issued. There are some points where I am logged out after inactivity and I have to sign in again, but it's a small annoyance to be able to look through new material. It's a lot of transcription and toggling between screens but I have found wrestling references in everything from high school and university newspapers, to databases with video segments covering wrestling from many angles. For fellow Wisconsin residents who want to try it, this link can get you started: https://badgerlink.dpi.wi.gov/resources I would presume that other states have a similar opportunity. They occasionally pop up a screen wanting you to utilize the trial feature, but I bypass it because I don't choose to make a clipped article. Being able to search at home instead of going to the library itself is a great benefit.

My latest search engine pro tip is that using the quoted phrase "wrestling card" draws a bunch more results for news articles than most other derivatives, and I'm uncovering some very targeted mentions in papers I looked through previously. "Wrestling" by itself is waay too broad a term, so I am pleased with these results.

I've been searching by either the arena, a "busy" wrestler from the area, or as you said "wrestling".
