Would I be correct in saying that this was something that pretty much happened ("inter fed title matches") from say 1977 to 1984 or so? The earliest I can remember is Graham (WWWF) vs Race (NWA) and the last one being Flair (NWA) vs Martel (AWA) in 84 or 85. In the middle we had Flair vs Backlund, Bockwinkle vs Backlund, Flair vs Bockwinkle, Backlund vs Race etc ... I am wondering if there were any before 1977 ... or even after 84-85

You have it all correct. Race vs Graham was the first. Flair vs Martel the last. There were some minor ones before that. The WWA Indianapolis Champion vs the NWA Champion (Kiniski vs Bruiser, Snyder vs Kiniski). The WWA Indianapolis Champion vs the AWA Champion (Bruiser vs Vachon). The San Francisco US Champion vs the WWWF Champion (Stevens vs Sammartino).

Martel vs. Flair was October 1985. After that, I'm guessing that Bockwinkel vs. Flair is the closest that it came to happening again, Jan 16/86 in Winnipeg. Bock was not AWA champion (he didn't regain until June) but many people mistake this as a title-vs-title match when discussing it or labelling footage. I have often wondered if Jumbo vs. Kerry in Japan, the night before Flair regained the NWA title from Kerry, was originally booked and advertised as an AWA vs. NWA title match. Jumbo lost the AWA belt about a week after Kerry won it. I'd be curious to know how that was advertised before it happened as there was only a two-three week window for al those title changes and I would imagine the card would have been announced before that.
