5/14/88 Las Vegas, NV @ Showboat Sports Pavilion I'm pretty certain Ricky Rice's partner in the Top Guns as John Paul at this point and don't recall seeing Derrick Dukes on AWA TV until Super Clash III in December. Does anyone recall this taping cycle? I could be off. Last edited on Thu May 14th, 2015 07:17 pm by tamalie |

I think Dukes was Rice's original Top guns partner in the days before the AWA when they were booked in Eddie Sharkey's Pro wrestling America. John Paul came in as Rice's AWA teammate at least through those Louisville and Memphis tapings of September 1988, but he left before the PPV took place, and that allowed Original Top Guns to reform, sort of a nod to the OMX run of the year before. It was awkward in its explanation to fans, but the neither team was an embarrassment.

It was Rice & Dukes on the 5/14/88 taping. I have most the '88 AWA stuff on DVD and Rice & Dukes did have one match together as a team but were not called the Top Guns. Earlier on in the taping, Dukes had a singles match and then came to the aid of Rice who was getting a beatdown by i believe Soldat Ustinov & Teijo Khan. By the next taping, Rice was paired with John Paul. They were not referred to by Larry Nelson as the Top Guns till I think around July/August '88. Dukes didn't return to AWA TV to my knowledge till SuperClash III and replacing Paul, with Rice claiming Bad Company had put him out of professional wrestling. Anyone know why John left? I still saw him pop up doing jobs on WWF TV during the mid-90's and a few matches for the AWF in '95. Last edited on Thu May 14th, 2015 10:52 pm by BrettEW |

I assume John Paul left due to issues with getting dates and getting decent pay.

For spatulapup, Did the two results you listed last month come out of an Uncle Lenny newsletter? Those results lookedlike some that I thought might be made up, as I recall posting some concerns about cards in another thread. I cannot find a web search match for Plankston, Wi. Except for the link to your post. Might be cause for a more detailed search as maybe the city is unincorporated but those would be immediate causes for.concern.
