The reason why I ask is because it is the night of the big MSG card that was stacked with Backlund-Duncum, Inoki-Iron Sheik, Race-Rhodes, Sakaguchi, Choshu, Fujinami, Hogan's MSG debut, Dibiase, Patterson, Bad News, etc. That card was stacked and I believe Andre was in the area as he worked card before which was in Long Island or something like that. I just found it odd they wouldn't have put him on the card, although maybe the office didn't want to pay his huge pay-out as I'm sure the pay-out would have been enourmous as it was with guys like Race, Rhodes, Backlund, Inoki and the other Japs on the card. Do you guys think that could have been the reason?

I doubt paying him was a issue. And i doubt he got huge payouts all the time. I never understood the rumors about Andre that float around. The facts prove them wrong. Andre appeared at many small venues in the WWWF. Looking for Andre to boost the attendance in a small arena that holds around 1000 people, when they already get that much attencance. Why would they even bring him in? But they brung him on just as many small venues, as they did on the larger venues. So Andre being used to promote cards just isnt how it really was done. If it was that way, they would have used him only on the larger venues where they could have put more butts in the seats. Andre normally spent a week in a territory at times. The promoters would use him in their venues that were available for their time span. Andre was booked way ahead for territories. And also Andre did not mean a sell out. To many venues prove that over the years.

I remember that card Andre was on right before the big MSG show in December wasn't all that big of a venue IIRC.

I can not speak of other territories, except the wwwf. Vince McMahon Sr. made sure all venues got the top stars. All the Champions worked the small venues as well as the large ones. Andre was no different than any other wrestler in the WWWF. And he was booked at the small and large venues. In the 70's the WWWF was booking 2 shows a day. 3 separate venues on Fridays. Not a matinee, but a pure split of the roster for 3 friday evening cards. On occasion the weekends would have a matinee, to make the 3 cards for a saturday or Sunday. But that didnt happen a lot. The 3 cards in Fridays was and did happen for years. So Vince J would most likey be sure Andre and any top star was always used at any venues when they sat down and figured out who go who. I am referring to the promoters showing up in Philadelphia where they split up the roster of dates and who got who in advance. Nothing happened in the WWWF on a day by day, or week by week basis. The dates of the venues to be used were known in advance. They would sit and vie for the wrestlers. And the venues always alternated the top talent so every one got them. North Attleboro, MA is a good example. Most consider it a C show. But look at the tallent that appeared their most of the time. Very small arena, but yet on a friday night, a night that would hold 3 separate cards they normally won the tallent. Except when they were opposing the monthly Pittsburg card.

Absolutly zero. They blew it big time with that. As succesful and as much as Andre and Graham liked to work together, they never did that match up. That should have happened at MSG instead of the Ivan Putski match. They had the match of the century and could have booked that as a 3 part series and made moeny had so many top venues around the world. Not just the WWWF. Graham was over in Houston as a heat magnet. As well as Andre was over their, same with the main Florida markets and as well as the WWWF. Why they blew the biggest WWWF matches for the title in the 70's I have no clue, That could have been a Shea Stadium card if they had even tried it. Ron wrote: Absolutly zero. Wow, I thought they at least had a couple matches for the strap. That is really surprising. I agree about them headlining Shea. That match as well as booking all the other top talent and maybe the NWA champ, Dusty, Bruno, etc could have pulled HUGE numbers, maybe even selling the stadium out. What do you think? Think they could have drew over fifty thousand paid?

If I booked it... Graham vs Andre headlining Rhodes vs Race underneath Bruno vs Patera Mascaras vs George the Animal Steele Backlund, Maivia vs Baron Von Rashke, Killer Kowalski elimination tag match. with maivia eliminated instantly. and Bob going over huge as he should have been built up. Fuji, Tanaka vs Garea, Zbyzsko No DQ match 2/3 falls Tag title match Gorilla Monsoon vs Butcher Vachon Johnny Rodz vs Baron Mikel Scicluna Throw in one hell of a angle with Graham interfering with a TV taping involving Race or Rhodes or even both, just to add more heat on Graham even tho he does not oppose them at Shea would make fans wonder if they (Rhodes or Race) would interfere in the Graham vs Andre match. Which would have given a DQ for outside interference and saved both Grahams title and Andres reputation Last edited on Tue Jul 29th, 2008 03:15 am by Ron |
