Clawmaster, Do you have the date and results for this card in Nashville, TN. I know Rick was the reigning AWA World Champ at the time. Funny they never had Rick in Memphis against Lawler (or anyone for that matter). Also, if you know the rest of the card, please include it as well. thx, MJ99 Last edited on Wed Nov 21st, 2007 01:32 am by mj99 ____________________ Memphis Wrestling History 1958-1993 http://www.memphiswrestlinghistory.com/ ![]() |

Thanks Claw, I spent the day at the library today. I got a few yrs done (not much there for 92 & 92), but the thing I'm happy about is I started on 1961. I know nothing about the old days in Memphis and seeing these cards/results is a lot of fun for me. Have a good turkeyday, mj99

mj99 wrote: Clawmaster, The powers-that-be in Memphis apparently did not think Martel vs. Lawler would draw. To this end, they took the step of going on tv and saying Bockwinkel had regained the belt from Martel in Vancouver, and Bockwinkel would in fact be coming in to defend against Lawler instead of Martel. They had a Ken Resnick interview with Bockwinkel as champ especially done for Memphis TV promoting the "title change". It should be noted that in the hype surrounding that match, it was repeatedly stated that Bockwinkel had regained the title under a mountain of controversy, and the AWA Board was reviewing the decision. This was done to explain how the title ended up back on Martel after Bock came in for his "Defense". The time frame on that was March or April 1985 IIRC, and I suspect if necessary they would have used video footage of a controversial finish in Winnipeg from 3/28 that saw Bock pin Martel with Rick's feet on the ropes, the ref restarting the match, and then Martel getting a pin with Bock's feet on the ropes. Not sure if they used the video in Memphis, but it was there if necessary later on for whatever reason. All done, at the end of the day, because Memphis didn't think Martel would put the fannies in the seats against Lawler. Given the great success of Bockwinkel vs. Lawler over the years I don't blame them for going the route that they did. I would have thought Favorite Son Lawler going up against any world champ would have drawn well. That is, if people believed Lawler had a chance.

I would have too, but I guess Lawler et al thought diffrently in this case. Could have been that there was not enough time to promote Martel as a heel to spice things up...Bockwinkel was a known heel quantity so it was an easy plug-in. Lawler likely thought a face vs. face title matchup wouldn't draw and he may have been right. Those sorts of matchups scream "DRAW" very often, not "title change".

You're probably right. It's funny how people who "believed" might have nontheless subconsciously picked up on the cues as to when to expect to see a title switch and when not to. Even as a kid going to see C-list WWF house shows, I knew better than to expect to see the Intercontinental title actually switch hands or anything. Why that didn't smarten me up to all of it, I can't say.

Jim Cornette has the gate listed as $41,000 for that card.
