Was Vick really that close to signing with the Bills or the Bengals? If so, why would Goodell step in and tell him not to?

Vick didn't want to sign with Eagles By Mark J. Miller
When Michael Vick(notes) signed with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2009, he sat behind Donovan McNabb(notes) and Kevin Kolb(notes) on the depth chart and didn't get a lot of work during the season. Then the team traded McNabb and Kolb got hurt in last season's first game, leaving Vick the space for a major shot of redemption. And he didn't let his team down in that department.
Now the 2010 AP Comeback Player of the Year tells GQ that he didn't even want to play for the Birds. "I think I can say this now, because it's not going to hurt anybody's feelings, and it's the truth," he told the magazine. "I didn't want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options."
However, GQ reports that after Vick had some conversations with Commissioner Roger Goodell and other folks from the league, he was convinced to not select the Buffalo Bills or Cincinnati Bengals.

Because the Bills and Bengals are two of the shittiest, dead end organizations in the league?

Well, playing for the Bengals probably would have meant a parole violation within a half-hour of inking the contract.

It's just an interesting "what if" scenario. If Vick hadn't landed in Philly, where would McNabb and Kolb be playing this week, and would Philly be such and attractive spot for all these free-agents?

Kolb would be the starter and McNabb would still be elsewhere.

They have a valid complaint though.  Why should Goodell be telling a player what to do?  That is up to the player to decide and Godell basically interfered with Cincinnati and Buffalo by telling Vick not to pick them over the Eagles.

Granted Buffalo and Cincinnati were and are still shitty teams, and Vick may havbe landed in trouble being on those teams, no one really knows though, and Goodell should never have interfered in Vick's choices at all

I would be pissed if I owned either of those teams. (of course they would be in better shape if I owned them, just sayin) I would be knocking on his door wanting explainations, might even file some kind of lawsuit.

same here.  Goodell crossed the line on telling a player where he should go

Again, it says "he was convinced not to select" either team.  It doesn't say he was told to make that decision.

It could very well be that after conferring with Goodell and the others that he spoke with, and gathered information that he himself was convinced.

Like Dank said, Vick didn't say Goodell told him where he should go. He just said that he was convinced not to selct them. He may have asked questions about the organizations and gotten legit answers that swerved him. Let's face it, the Eagles are one of the better run teams in the league. The other two are not.

And like Tofu said, I'm pretty sure signing with the Bengals is an automatic parole violation.

Vick -

"Commissioner never told me to sign or not sign with particular teams.  I want to make it clear this was a decision I made"

Greg Aiello -

"The Commissioner would never steer a player to or away from particular teams and did not do so in this case"

Fuck Goodell. I'm surprised he didn't "convince" Vick to sign with the Jets, his favorite team.

EDIT: Vick is now backtracking and claiming this didn't happen or something.

No, he's saying it was taken out of context.
