The refs' contract expired May 31rst, and you can tell how concerned the league is about it since they've already announce they're locking them out and hiring refs from the non BCS college conferences (since they don't want to upset their free developmental system).

I'm sure everyone here will understand when their team gets screwed on a call because a ref from the Arena league isn't used to running more than 50 yards at a time. The NFL only made a bazillion dollars last year, they can't be expected to give raises to their part time ref crews.

Fuck those refs, they suck anyway.

It's not like they can get anyone any less competent than those ass-clowns.

I have a feeling you might be wrong about that.

I have always read that NFL officials work in the offseason, so I always thought they were not paid very much.  Then I read last night, 1st year refs get $78K, kinda hard for me to feel sorry for them.

They're the ones making calls in games that generate billions, and the NFL can't even make it a full time job? As key a role they play in the revenue that is generated, they are grossly underpaid.

It's just the NFL fucking with these guys because they feel they can. The league can double these guys' salaries and it wouldn't make a dent on anything, but they won't just so they can smack their dicks across the ref's faces like they do to the players.

All that would do is force the NFL to hire brand-new officials. Most NFL zebras are lawyers, entrepreneurs, doctors, and college professors in the offseason. If it comes down to their career or officiating they're going to go with their bread and butter.

They've also spent years working up the ranks to where they are at. One of the trainers where I work is a high school ref who's goal is to make it to a major college conference, and the stories he's told about the NFL refs he's met are amazing.

The NFL has guys who accompany refs from the moment they leave their house until the moment they return home in order to keep any criminal element from getting to them. Even when they shower, they sit right outside to make sure there's no time when they are able to be approached. So basically the NFL will hire crews to watch Ed Hoculi's cock in the shower, but giving these guys a full time job is out of the question. They are supposedly so concerned about these guys being approached by gamblers/mobsters/assorted criminals during football season, but what's to say they won't sell a house to Jimmy the Shark in the off season?

Just to be clear, I don't think NFL refs are going to starve to death anytime soon. I just see it as more hypocritical bullshit from the NFL when they claim everything they do is for the betterment of the game, and then they do some Vince McMahon style fuckin' with people just for teh lolz.

Absolutely agree. And what about the first player who's injured as a result of some bumpkin ref, and decides to sue everyone in sight?

I thought they worked other jobs DURING the season...I remember years ago seeing something about one of the refs who was a high school principal, working a Monday night game, then taking the red eye home to be at school Tuesday morning.

Some might.

IIRC one official does NFL and he also does College Basketball games as well.
