He has 3 years and 61 million left on his deal. Per ESPN. If he ties Willy Mays Hr total (660) and he's currently only 6 behind, he triggers another 6 million dollar payoff.

Right now he's 5th in HR. Breakdown is this

Bonds 762
Aaron 755
Ruth 715
Mays 660
Arod 654

Rbi's

Aaron 2297
Ruth 2213
Bonds 1996
Gehrig 1995
Arod 1969

If he plays out the next 3 years, even at a PT player, you figure he should be able to get close to Ruth in HR's. RBI's, he'll leapfrog Gehrig and Bonds..but at 244 behind Ruth, that's less than likely. So probably ends up 3rd all time in HR and RBI' presuming 3 mediocre years.

Do the Yankees cut him though and just swallow the contract during that time, just to get him out of the organization? Or if cut, does a team like Houston pick him up just to DH?

Yankees will just swallow that contract I bet..no way they want him back in a Yankees uniform. And I'm sure some team will bring him in for a look but he's probably done for don't you think? He was shot before the suspension, he's only getting older, without the PEDs he's useless..

I wonder if the 6 million payoff is transferrable. Meaning if the Yanks cut him and swallow the 61 million, and he goes and signs with another team as a DH, if he gets to 660 does are the Yanks still on the hook for that bonus?

That's what I thought, but Cashman did just announce that he and A-Rod had a productive conversation about facilitating his return next season.  It was the first public comments Cashman has made about him pretty much all year.  And it should be noted that, for all his faults, Cashman hasn't danced around A-Rod and said publicly that he has to "shut the fuck up" last year, so I tend to believe him when he says, with obvious resignation in his voice, that they're working on a plan for next year.

I can't imagine him back, it's just a huge distraction, but he's also such a loose cannon with his constant legal threats and really wants to continue to play for the Yankees.  They can't trade him, and he won't accept them sitting him and paying him.  And they desperately need offense and really have no one better anyway.  So I don't know.  It's just a mess.
