The Pac 12, Big 10, and MWC conferences have all opted out of the 2020 College Football Season. They all hope to play come spring.

I think the conferences planning to play this fall are in denial. The cavalier attitude of so many 17 to 23 year olds about social distancing and mask wearing mean trouble is luring close by. I expect we will see some mass outbreaks among players resulting in scrubbed games that cannot be made up, players walking out, schools deciding to pull the plug on their own, and possibly a halt to the season like the NBA and NHL faced in March.

Who knows when or if a safe and effective vaccine will be created and be ready for distribution? At least that's much more likely in the spring than in the fall. I'd rather college football wait and have a shot at getting through its season without interruption, possibly with fans in live attendance, than charging ahead this fall because people want to get back to normal and therefore really want football.

Not College or NFL ( are they going to have a season? Normally we'd be halfway through the exhibition games by now) but the Canadian Football League officially cancelled its season today.  The had asked for some league wide financial assistance from the Feds and were turned down. That spelled the deathnell for the season.

Figures. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers win the Grey Cup in 2019 for the first time in 29 years and a virus wipes out their chance to defend.

In a league where gate revenue matters quite a bit, they were fucked more than most right from the get go. Hopefully all the teams can hold it together until next year to try again. I think it'll be touch and go for a few of them.

Bombers were laying off office staff today.  It's the teams in the East that will be hardest hit I think.  Most had shirty attendance last season so a completely lost season is going to be tough to deal with.

The teams in the West stronger fanbases but still not any real revenue. For the Bombers Canad Stadium,  already a white elephant to a certain extent has been sitting there unused, no alternate revenue stream.
Not out of the realm of possibilities that fewer than 9 teams operate next season.

Agreed.

Will be interesting to see if the Atlantic Canada bid is still a thing when play returns to "normal".

Well they don't have a stadium yet and they also went hat in hand to the provincial government for money to build a stadium .
And Anthony LeBlanc one of the driver's behing getting a team in the Maritimes left for Ottawa of the NHL.

This might be 1983 all over again, the last time someone tried to get a team to the Maritimes.

Has the NCAA commented on how they will handle player eligibility due to all of this? I know in the grand scheme of things it may seem trivial but I know in the past once you enrolled your clock was ticking.

I wonder how many of these players aren’t going to be able to continue post Covid due to falling too far out of shape.

Are the athletes expected to still attend classes even if their sport is a no go?

In softball the NCAA added a year of eligibility to all the players who lost their season last year.  I think this was on a sport by sport basis, but I'd think other sports would do the same.

Yes, athletes are expected to attend classes... as much as they were expected to in the past.
