Julius "Dr J" Erving

Made basketball a much more viewer-friendly game with his aerobatic dunks and flashy passes. Before Dr. J, basketball was boring.

Hack-A-Shaq

He physical dominance at the paint created a strategy to foul him and have him beat you at the free throw line instead of trying to play any defense against him.

Bobby Orr. Hockey's first truly offensive defenceman.

Nadia Comaneci changed Women's gymnastics with her performance at the 1976 Olympics.

Her performance made gymnastics more popular worldwide and changed the body type and training of many future gymnasts.

Matt Kenseth was so consistent that NASCAR changed their entire points system to this incredibly stupid "playoff system" they use today.

Dale Earnhardt also changed NASCAR by his death causing the HANS device to be mandatory for all drivers, ehich gad certainly saved lives..

Stan Mikita is credited with the innovation of the curved or "banana" blade on a hockey stick, which allows the player more velocity on their shot.

Hm, misunderstood the title, thought it would be about e.g. Fabien Barthez who went from winning the World Cup with France to taking part in the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

That's a really good one.

Are the stories about the NBA changing the height of the net (Wilt) true or is that just an old story?

I've not heard that, but the NCAA did change the rules to prevent Wilt from dunking. IIRC if your hand with the ball went over the rim/cylinder it was called offensive goaltending.

If they really wanted to limit his scoring then they would have allowed him to dunk, but for it to count he's have to then make a free throw

They did widen the lane and establish the three-second rule due to Wilt.

Mel Blount made it where you can't knock receivers silly anymore.

To the other end of this idea, Clint Malarchuk getting his throat slashed by an errant skate blade in the 80’s should have changed goaltending safety and brought in mandatory neck protection (a collar to protect against skate cuts). It didn’t, and to this day that accident is preparing to repeat itself, especially with the speed of skaters increasing dramatically in the last few decades.
It boggles my mind that goalies play without neck protection…I mean, almost all of them. A shot in the Adam’s apple (preventable by the hanging neck protection attaching to the mask) or a skate to the throat (preventable by a simple protective collar) will kill one of them, it’s only a matter of time. Then the hand wringing will finally make those things mandatory.

So this one if I guess for the change in the sport that will happen someday soon…too bad someone will have to die to make it happen.
