Thought I'd start a World Cup thread for those who are watching, and for the other 95% for you to make jokes in.

Some highlights so far:

The $175 a night "hotels" that many fans had booked into are actually just two man tents with two basic beds and an electric fan. The high temperatures, even in November, mean that the "rooms" are unbearable unless it's dark outside.

Two days before the tournament, Qatar banned the sale of beer in stadiums. Leading $100m sponsors Budweiser to Tweet (then quickly delete) "this is awkward."

This morning, on day two of the tournament, FIFA stated that only officially sanctioned captain's armbands can be worn, scuppering the plans of eight European countries' captains to wear rainbow "One Love" pro LGBTQ+ armbands, as they have done for the past few years in every other game. 8 years in prison in Qatar if you are gay, but these guys buckle at the threat of a yellow card. The usual punishment for this kind of thing would have been a fine, which the countries had declared they were willing to pay, so Qatar made FIFA change the punishment.

To the football:

Last night, hosts Qatar lost 2-0 to Ecuador in the most boring opening match I can every remember. Even though they are the current Asian champions, they looked woefully outmatched and out-of-place, in the only match they had been given any chance of winning. With Ecuador leading 2-0 at half-time, the second half was played at walking pace and had less intensity than a training session. If Ecuador had given their all for 90 minutes, the score would have been 5-0 or 6-0. Many of the fans are paid to go to the matches, due to poor ticket sales, and half the stadium left at half-time.

Watching England v Iran right now and we've had the farcical situation of a 10-minute delay while the clearly concussed Iranian goalkeeper received treatment. A minute after play resumed, he called for a sub and collapsed. Football is suffering from it's own concussion issues, although not at the level of the American flavor of the sport, but it's a clear violation of the current rules to allow a possibly concussed player to continue. (EDIT: A player who has to come off because of a concussion can't play for 10 days, which covers the next two games, so they kept him on so he could play those games, then he collapsed, so...) Ticketing IT issues mean that after 20 minutes, there are still England fans outside waiting to get in. They ended up just letting people in without being able to check any tickets. Good just it was only a few hundred.

Is this going to be the most malinged World Cup ever? This is the least I've ever cared about one, and Canada actually is in this time. But the fact that it's in a 3rd World Shithole (I know Qatar financially isn't as such, but the mentation of the leadership of that nation like most in the region is set back a few thousand decades) that Fans are subjected to a sanitized experience, and they're playing in temps comparable to Mercury leads me to think that this would have been better of being played in North Korea.

England 6, Iran 1. (EDIT: 6-2. This game just wouldn't end...) Another of Asia's best teams embarrassed on the world stage. Teams from Asia and Africa get extra places in the World Cup in an attempt to grow the game there. This has been happening for decades now, and it's definitely improved the standards of African football, along with many African players now playing in Europe. Asian football seems to be going backwards now, probably because most of them choose (or feel obliged to, or are forced to) play in their home countries. This game wasn't competitive at all, and Iran offered nothing apart from their one goal, which was mostly down to the English defence losing concentration on account of having nothing to do all game.

I expect Netherlands v Senegal to be similarly one-sided, but we might get a game out of USA v Wales this evening.

I'd like to see Wales take out the US just to listen to some of my friends who are Sporting KC homers start an early meltdown towards a US exit.

Interesting from the pre-match press conference of England v Iran. Iran's manager Carlos Queiroz (who is from Portugal) was basically asked how he could justify managing Iran given what is happening in the country at the moment with the suppression of the women's rights movement. England manager Gareth Southgate was then asked by an Iranian journalist how he could justify managing English given the illegal war in Iraq and the country spending millions on the Queen's funeral when the people can't afford food or heat. Neither answered, obviously, but the circus is much more interesting than the football at the moment.

Netherlands-Senegal was pretty boring until the late goals.

Great goal by Weah to put the USA ahead at half-time. Wales is basically England, so I always want them to lose. Hopefully the USMNT can extend their lead in the second half.

Wales fans had their rainbow-colored hats confiscated by stadium security.

I'm a big football fan and have zero interest in it this time around. I hated Qatar getting to host it since day 1. Fuck Qatar and fuck FIFA.

I missed the start of the England-Iran game, so I didn't notice that the Iran players didn't sing their national anthem in a protest. Good on them, but they'll all be in prison by the end of the year.

A stupid penalty to give away, but USA should probably be happy with that point.

Somewhat disappointed that USA gave up that penalty kick to squander a win. We need to do much better against England on Friday if we hope to advance.

This world cup might be comparable with Argentina 1978, that also had a dreadful opening game (Germany vs Poland, just boring. So boring, that I want to watch it just to see if it is comparable to Germany vs Algeria from 1982).
1978 was interesting, as our organisation was shady as fuck and the players did interviews, that could be described as naive or plain ignorant of politics. I think I had watched a Scotland 1978 documentary at one point, but I can't remember about the players talking about the junta. I don't exactly want to critizise them, but it will be interesting in the future just to see how you can't get away with an apolitical stance as an athlete anymore.
TV ratings will be very interesting, but it is too soon to see trends.
