Golfing fans remember this one. One day after his 45th birthday,
Roberto de Vicenzo shot a 65 in the final round of the 1968 Masters,
which ties him with Bob Goalby & a playoff will determine the winner.
But, his playing partner Tommy Aaron writes a  par 4 (17th hole) on RdV's
scorecard, when RdV actually had a birdie 3.
RdV signs the scorecard & hands it to the officials. While he shot a 65,
the scorecard reads 66. A blunder by both Aaron & RdV.
Goalby wins the Masters by one stroke.

If he had stayed on I'm not sure I don't think France would've won it anyway, (though they probably would've scored one more penalty).

It was his last game. He'd been off his prime for a long time and then had as good a game as he'd ever had against Brazil in the semis. And it was a once off, a bried return to the very very top. And he went back down to the previous level for the final, couldn't get up to that high again.

Jan Van de Velde at the British Open that one year. He could have just played it safe and won easily. Instead he had to be a hero, and blew it.
