My dad despised O'Malley, as he grew up a Brooklyn Dodger fan.  So I am posting this great article by Pete Hamill in the NY Daily News as tribute, as he seems to summarize the same feelings that my dad would have if he were still around.

Hey HBF,

I find this topic very interesting.  A few months back, I watched that HBO documentary on the Brooklyn Dodgers.  It was interesting because people in Brooklyn hate O'Malley for what he did.  But looking at the circumstances the documentary presented, it seems like he really didn't have a choice.  He was losing money on Ebbetts Field cause its was old.  He tried to build a new stadium in downtown Brooklyn, but Robert Moses who controlled NY Real estate, wasn't going to let him build in Brooklyn. He was trying to push O'Malley out to Flushing.  If O'Malley went to Flushing, I wonder if the Brooklyn faithful would still react the same way.

I live close to Baltimore and I remember how pissed Colts fans were when they left for Indy due to the same reasons.  I guess as sports fans, we could care less about the circumstances, we just expect the team owners to figure it out and get it done to keep teams in their respective cities.  I just think that the whole story about the Dodgers is fascinating.

I completely agree.  O'Malley definitely made a business decision and some of it was fueled by external factors (Moses, for example) but he broke a lot of hearts in the process. With the exception of the romanticized rooting of the Cubs fans, there is no greater love for a baseball team than the Brooklyn Dodgers fans.
