WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday as chief rival Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney will say at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

"This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters... many of you right here in this room... have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming President. If this were only about me, I would go on. But I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, I feel I must now stand aside, for our party and for our country," Romney said.

McCain prevailed in most of the Super Tuesday states, moving closer to the numbers needed to officially win the nomination.

I can't imagine things getting worse than McCain vs. Hillary.  I guess Huckabee might be worse, but Jesus...we're fucked for another 4 years.

Yes, Huckabee would be much worse.  I cannot relate to that man in almost any capacity.

I've always thought McCain would get the Republican nomination as he is the insiders choice. He will be bought and paid for by the global big business elite like this current president has been.Hillary is sort of a maverick.I think those insiders are scared of her and are putting their support behind Obama. The Democratic nomination processs is going to get really heated. It should be fun to watch.

Clinton, McCain and Obama are all insiders. They all have a symbiotic relationship with big businesses. The real outsider is Huckabee, who nobody knows.

Every single one of them are insiders.  You don't get that far without being one.  If someone's not an insider, you probably never heard of him.  It requires party support and media attention, two things that a real maverick would never get, thus the best candidates are the ones who can't raise a dime.  Ron Paul is the closest to a real maverick out of the Big Two candidates.

I agree with you.  If you have not read the book "The Brethren" by John Grisham, it's really an excellent novel about the concept of getting an unknown elected.  I hadn't thought of that book in awhile until I read your comment.

Its nearly next to impossible to be elected dog catcher in a major city without being an insider.

Last time I checked, the Romney campaign was 37 million in debt. I am guessing that could be the real reason he guy is quitting.
