I thought about naming Cherone, but the guy can sing. I think it was more of a timing thing, more than anything else. I always thought cherone would have been the ideal replacement for Freddie Mercury in Queen,
Also, the little Filipino dude who sings for Journey now is a monster.
Of course Cherone can sing, but you asked for worst replacement singer, and he was. Good in his own right, horrible replacement choice for VH.
From a die hard Journey fan: Pineda can sing, but hes a tribute band singer, nothing more. If they werent trotting out Perry clone, after Perry clone, like they have w/3 singers now, &continuing to call it Journey? I wouldnt feel that way. Guys good, but how did he get the job? Imitating/sounding like someone else. Just like Augeri &JSS did.
Augeri's voice nearly gave out, trying to imitate Perry.
It's unfair to criticize Augeri and Soto. The 2 Augeri albums (plus an EP) were very, very solid, and Arrival had some of their best work since the peak. It was better than the previous 2 Perry albums, but it got literally zero promotion. Augeri should have been given a year off to rest but the plowed on - the money's in the tour. Poor bastard's lucky he can sing now.
Soto is fantastic but Cain and Schon are hooked on their "legacy sound" and Soto's voice is too deep.
Pineda does his best. But he's not as good live or on record as Augeri, and often times sounds just brutal on some of the more difficult Perry stuff. The drummer, Deen Castronovo, is actually a better Journey
vocalist than Arnel Pineda.
I think Augeri &Soto are great singers, just not for Journey. Both got the gigs, bc they sounded alot like Perry. If they had a different sound, then they wouldnt make any money as a band. The legacy thing is whats paying their bills right now.
Their new disc, sounds like a cheap, tribute band, trying to sound like Journey. I couldnt even get past the 4th or 5th song, it was so bad.
Pineda better have iron lungs, dont know what the band would do, if he went down, ala Augeri. Truthfully, think Pinedas ok....but all this " omg he sounds exactly like Perry" bs....is just that. Yeah he does sound similar, but alot of times, he struggles to recreate that sound, making him &the band come off looking cheapLast edited on Sat Dec 10th, 2011 05:40 pm by stingmark
