Blended classes are a disaster. The kid should not have been in there in the first place. Blended classes just bring down everyone else.

All due respect, you couldn't be more wrong in my opinion. My wife is a special ed teacher and my daughter was/is a special needs kid. While there are extreme instances that require removing a kid from a classroom, more often than not, kids with special needs and educational delays thrive in a peer to peer setting as opposed to cordoning off all the "difficult" kids into a rubber room so they can be ignored.

This doesn't seem like much more than a frustrated teacher without the ability to work with a kid like this and she wanted to demean him. There's 2-3 weeks left in school...why else do this now other than to demean him?

Not to mention the fact that he's only 5 and they don't seem to even have a diagnosis for him.  Unless there's an obvious disability, they're not likely to start pulling kids out of normal classrooms in kindergarten.

Something doesn't smell quite right. By throwing in "the nurse" it makes me think there is some credence, but at the same time, the level of thought she is associating with these kindergarteners seems a tad bit much. Comparing the teacher with Al-Qaida is especially nice.

Purely amateur diagnosis from five minutes of video make me wonder if it's just bad parenting. She made no effort to control him while he was sitting with her. Unless there is a long history of family issues in that department, I don't think anyone is going to jump at a diagnosis for another year.

Mainstreaming for old school standard special education has gone overboard in the past few years. They used to just mainstream in science, social studies, and p.e. That was fine. I'm all for social interaction. And as much as I hate social studies being pissed on, mainstreaming in social studies isn't going to hurt the child.

Putting the kid in standard math and reading classes is too much. S/he is holding back the class at that point. Special ed tops out generally at 4th-7th grade reading level. Math is probably worse. Special ed has a difficult time with advanced operations or even word problems (especially two step word problems).

Special education needs to focus on life skills beginning at the junior high level. Standard special ed isn't going to college.

Asperger's is another pony. I've dealt with a kid diagnosed as such. Social interaction is the problem there. This kid was upper level math. I walked softly around him as I was told his tantrums were the stuff of legend. Does Asperger's belong in a regular ed classroom? Yes, but only is s/he can hold up their end of the deal.

Sorry that you have this disorder, kiddo, but there are 24 other kids in here that deserve to learn, too.

I'm not blaming the kid, obviously, I am blaming the staff. I don't think blended classes can even begin to work unless you have special ed teachers that understand the subject matter. I have no idea where your wife teaches, but I was in one situation where the kids seemed to get confused because of underqualified special ed teachers not knowing what was going on. They would have these tutoring sessions where I would end up getting called down because I had to explain the material to the teacher. I don't think the lady was even licensed in Social Studies.

When I was going through my observation phase, I sat in on a blended U.S. History class where the kids were given different pieces of the Constitution and had to write down the Article and the Section they were found. The special ed teacher in the room walked over to the special ed kids and said to them "I'm not very good with this material" and proceeded to discuss some upcoming dance with the kids instead. She then asked me to help them, even though I wasn't supposed to.

With the poorly qualified special ed staffs that I have seen and dealt with, too much time is devoted to them and the others get left out. The whole blended setup as I have seen it is a failure. Schools need to be ready before they make the jump.

Discipline or not, the fact that autism is even suspected in the kid merits some give from the teacher, at least until a diagnosis is made.

And no teacher, ever, ever should be a part of singling out a child for ridicule at the front of the class and putting it to a vote as to whether he stays in the class.

Ever.  Under any circumstances.  She should absolutely lose her teaching credential and criminal charges should be filed because it's absolutely emotional abuse.

Because she's a stupid uneducated rotten cunt who has no business dealing with children.
