I was out this afternoon and had lunch at an Indian restaurant up the road. After the meal I still couldn't get the spice off my tongue, so I walked over to the Stone Cold Creamery that is a few stores over to pick up a small ice cream to alleviate the issue.

When I get in there are 3 workers behind the counter. There is only one other customer other than me, a lady probably late 30's or so. From what I could gather she had ordered an ice cream cake for her daughter's birthday, came in to get it, but they claimed she'd already picked it up. She insisted she had not (but had been charged for it as she ordered it online). So the girl at the register is pretty much just arguing for the sake of arguing. The woman politely requests to talk to the manager. The girl says he's not there. So the woman asks if she can just get a refund on her CC. The girl refuses to give her one. After some back/forth the workers calls the manage, and he's pretty much a douche to the lady over the phone (I could hear the conversation as it was on a amped up portable phone) The guy continues to tell the lady he's not going to give her a refund as she already got the cake and states that's he's not falling for her attempt to scam them.

Finally the lady, pretty much crying at this point walks out. So, about 5 minutes later the girl comes out of the back area telling her 2 coworkers " Oh look, I found the cake, it was in the freezer" They all have a big fucking laugh over it. I"m not sure why that girl couldn't have even bothered looking for it in the first place, other than just to be an asshole over it. The ironic thing is, my stepdaughter worked at this place maybe 6 years ago while in HS, and mentioned that the Manager was a douchebag (it's the same guy since I heard him state his name on the call) At the time I just figured my stepdaughter was being a typical complaining teenager. Seems she was obviously right on this issue. All that shit over a $20 cake.

That really is terrible, and I feel for that woman. I work in retail and we see both sides of the coin. People with legitimate issues and fraudulent con artists who try scamming their way through life. This seems like a case of an honest woman who received the worst customer service in history, and the reason corporate office hotlines exisist.

If she has AMEX, they'll refund her in a heartbeat.  They're awesome.  Don't know about other cc companies, but assuming she's not asking for credits often, I can't imagine that all of them won't instantly take it off her bill and eat it themselves.  I'm never even asked questions when I complain about a vendor, or when there's a fraudulent charge on my card (which sadly happens once a year now, including a douche who ordered used power tools and Playstation gist cards from Amazon just last month).  AMEX even went to bat with me against the PayPal Nazis once. 

But aside from the money issue, this could've ruined her daughter's birthday and I hope she raises the issue with corporate, and as a bystander you should as well, and use names if you have them.  Common sense says no one is scamming a second birthday cake, that doesn't even make sense, it's just not the kind of thing you try to get a second one of.  So the customer is always right, especially in this instance.  Of course, its the old Catch-22, because if someone had common sense they wouldn't be working at Cold Stone.  So let's give them a raise in their minimum wages and reward them for not being able to find a real job because of reasons exactly like the one you just described.

When I was an adult living in Boston, I went into a McDonald's one afternoon and ordered a quarter-pounder.  I sat down and was eating it and was about 1/2 way through when I noticed that the meat was red inside.  Not cooked properly.  Not willing to take any chances, I went to the counter to ask for a replacement.   When I worked at McDonalds as a teenager in Canada, I was told that if the customer had any legit problem with the food, you'd basically fixed it no questions asked.  Only if you felt there was some kind of fraud or something would you call the manager.
I show the girl the red inside the burger and right away the girl calls for the manager and this guy comes out, takes a look at the burger and asks "If it wasn't cooked properly, why did you eat half of it?".  I told him that I didn't know it wasn't cooked until I saw the inside of it, and I wasn't really looking at my burger while I was eating it, I was talking to someone or doing something else (I can't really remember now).  Anyway, the manager - in front of a packed place (this was about 5pm) and told me rudely 'No, you're just a scammer trying to get a free burger" and told me to get lost.  I got upset and the whole thing escalated to the point where the guy was threatening to call the cops.  I told him to call the cops over a $3 under cooked burger.  He basically grabbed a replacement, slammed it on the counter and told me to take the burger and get the hell out of the restaurant.
If it matters at all, I'm a clean-cut sober white guy, normal looking in every regard.   Also, the manager never said that the burger wasn't under cooked - it was clearly red inside and that wasn't debated.  The whole issue was that he felt it was a scam since I ate half of it and then asked for a replacement.

Wow, just wow.  If I got that e-mail I would've preferred if he just told me to go fuck myself.  And the gmail address is really bizarre.  How do they not have their own corporate e-mail?

If you have extra time on your hands, I would go on LinkedIn and find the profiles of some of the higher-ups and send them your original complaint along with this reply and tell them it's unacceptable.  I guarantee one of them will be appalled, heads will roll, and you are likely to get some free shit.
