After almost 50 years, the Thanksgiving tradition holds up just as well today as it did during Vietnam.  A hilarious tale that points out the absurdity of bureaucracy and hypocrisy more than actually being "anti-war", although that element exists too.

A lot of my friends and I have joked for years about belonging on the Group W bench.

My buddy across the street introduced me to the Alices Restaurant tradition on Thanksgiving about 15 years ago. We listen to it every year as he does the deep fried turkeys while drinking beer. A great tradition!

They use to play it on a local radio station for at least 20-25 years every Thanksgiving. Not sure if they still do.

Just about every radio station I know plays it every year, usually at noon.  And I usually catch it at some point.  I turned on the radio right after my wife finished watching the parade yesterday.

For the record, Arlo is starting a tour in late January and has decided to break out this song on select stops.  He rarely plays it live, and it's been more than 10 years since the last time.  He said he's going to have to spend most of December re-learning the timing and all the nuances of the story because it's been so long and he never listens to it on the radio himself.

These days he would've gotten shot in the back by a cop who claimed he had a gun.

Bump. The song was released in 1967 but today is the 50th anniversary of the events that inspired the song.

Bump. Just listened to this on Q104.3 at noon, as it’s always played every Thanksgiving. Such a fantastic song.

I sat down and really listened to the lyrics this year and I must say I'm shocked and appalled. There was no inclusion of any LBGT character. Also, the use of "you" can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant shows a complete disregard for proper pronoun usage. Let me not leave out the inherent racism that frames the entire song. When Arlo goes down for his Army physical, there is not one mention of a person of color especially in a leadership role. Also, I know there was a war on at the time but was the Army going to just give Arlo and company guns and ammo without a ten week waiting period and not only the psych eval he had at the recruiting office but a psych eval that was peer reviewed by three other psychiatrists? Finally, did Alice have a right to choose???

Well he does say "faggot" near the end, that should count for some inclusion.  I'm always surprised they haven't started to bleep that out yet, even though it's said in a way to make fun of the right.  Leftist kids don't understand context or history, but fortunately they also have no idea this song exists even though it should be required listening for any real leftist.

I can't believe they still allow that word on the radio.  When's the last time you heard the full version of "Money For Nothing" on the radio?  That song led to one of the most ridiculous bits of self-censorship I've ever heard.  Brothers in Arms had only been released a few weeks earlier when Dire Straits played "Money For Nothing" at Live Aid and Marc Knopfler substituted "queenie" for "faggot" despite the fact that back then radio stations all played the song as is.   And it doesn't need to be mentioned that the lyrics are in the third person, so it's not like Knopfler should be accused of hate speech -- a term that didn't even exist in 1985 -- he's merely reading out the speech of an anonymous person.  But the seeds for our demise were already bearing fruit even back then.
