My wife is heading to NYC for a weeks work at NY Presbyterian on Thursday. She's working Thurs to Tues, then staying over for 3 days to visit her sister. She'll be staying on 37th between 8th and 9th and then on 39th between 8th and 9th for the last few days.

Any good ethnic places you know of in the region since that's one major thing we lack here in KC. Plenty of steak and bbq, but not much for food diversity.

I'm not the best person to ask about "ethnic" because all I really like personally when I eat out are steakhouses and Italian, and I'm more familiar with the east side than Hell's Kitchen.  But I've got a few recommendations.

There's a good Mexican restaurant that even I like called Toloache on 50th and 8th.  Been there 3 times.

I hear raves about Sushi Zen on 44th and 6th for Japanese.

Il Punto is an Italian restaurant but prides itself on being very authentic and Mediterranean and not your typical American Italian place.  It's on 38th and 9th.

Let me know if you have a particular type in mind and I can ask around.  Brazilian is becoming huge here, Middle Eastern, Turkish.  But I can't say I've personally eaten at any of those places.

But try to go to Bull & Bear in the Waldorf Astoria at least once and compare it to the steakhouses you have in KC.  It's the best I've ever been to, much better than our more famous ones Peter Luger and the original Palm.

And if you need bars in Hell's Kitchen, I can be a lot more help there too.  It's a fun area, although the heart of the action is about 8-12 blocks up from you guys (still not far away).

And it probably doesn't matter to you, but be aware that you picked the one area in Manhattan not covered in subway lines so you really only have the 8th Ave line up there and a lot of walking depending on exactly where you are and where you want to go, but you're right on 8th anyway for the hotel at least.  The west side is not nearly as saturated with subways as the east.

My wife went to Manhattan this summer with her friend and my wife had to talk her out of eating at Applebee's in Time Square.

Thanks for the recommendations. She likes Mexican and Italian and Mediterranean, so I"ll make mention of those especially.

If she likes seafood, City Crab in Gramercy Park is a long-time fave of mine that I go back to whenever I'm in NYC.
