Are these the most worthless bunch or what?

Entitled, lazy, and stupid.  And don't give me the "You just have to manage them differently" bs line.  They suck.

There are some overt differences I see with the newer nurses coming in now, from even say 10 years ago. One is the conflict between the rules on not carrying a cellphone on the floor during work, and their refusal to respect that rule. The bullshit excuses I hear are " I need to be able to have my kids contact me" which makes no sense considering we carry phones on us for work and there are also land lines ever 15 ft on the floor. Mgt has had to write up/suspend staff over this issue, but they still continue to dart into empty rooms to check their facebook status every 10 minutes.

The bigger issue is call ins, which for whatever reason, this past year has become beyond problematic. The rule is simple. If you call in for 3 incidences (an incdident isn't necessarily just 1 shift, if you call in a few in a row for sickness and it's the same issue it's just 1 incident if it's contiguous) in 3 months or 6 in a rolling 9 months you get a verbal warning. Next is a written warning, then finally you're fired. I know 3 or 4 right now on written warnings, and a few who have been terminated the last 6 months for it. Most of the time mgmt allows for even more leniency with the policy because of short staffing lately, but we have one girl who now is on incident 11 in hte past 9 months, and just called in for her 6th shift in a row yesterday. I was told today she was shitcanned. She's 24 or 25.

The reality though is that when the majority of your new hires are between 21 and 25 this is going to be an ongoing problem.

Dude, this has been a problem I've been noticing a LOT the last 2 years or so where I work. It's bad, real bad. We've tried to hire some new route guys that are between 20-30 and all but one have been absolutely useless. The only reason the one is good is he's a supervisor's son and he grew up around this place and respects it and wants to do a good job. It's gotten so the last 6 months or so our operations manager has pretty much decided he's not hiring anyone under 40 to run a route. We've got a few guys in their 50's that were out of work due to the furniture/textile industry around here being slack and those guys do a KICKASS job.

They do not care.  They will call in at the drop of a hat.
I'm dealing with one that comes in late EVERY day.  Strolls in at 9:15.  This is an office/professional/sales environment so he is not on the clock but should arrive between 8 and 8:30 at the latest.  His wife had a baby 7 to 8 months ago.  She doesn't work.  He told a co-worker he has lets her "sleep in".  WTF.  You are the bread winner.  You show your ass up and go to work.

We have the same problem with some of our youngest teachers at school. They are great in the classroom but can not show up on time for morning duty for shit. When you are short staffed to begin with and need to actively supervise young kids, you need to show up on time.

I'm pretty sure the answer to all these issues is to pay them more.  That always works.

Because the former "boss" did not address, I now have a newly inherited employee that for the last 9 months hasn't done shot and thinks he's great. Plus his father in law is a doctor so he thinks he is a part of "high society".

Tomorrow will be a reality check I believe.

ITT.

We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. I didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Yeah, the "out sick" deal is what I've noticed the most with them. That & when they actually think they're sick they feel the need to have to leave early to go to emergency or a walk in clinic....basically for what amounts to "I think I'm getting a cold."
And Mounta, you'll know what this contraption is....that device that the Dr. hooks up to you when your heart is racing. I don't know how many times I've had employees complain of their heart beating too fast & trouble breathing, so they miss a day or two while they wear that device for 24 hours, but nothing ever comes of it. It's usually the younger female secretaries that pull that stunt. I figure it's just anxiety eh? Usually would happen when they were having trouble with their boyfriends, like breaking up with them.

I had this young guy working for me a couple years ago who came in, did his job, quick learner, hard working, etc, etc, but the freaking kid would call in sick at least once every two weeks, sometimes twice in one week, & some of those times he wouldn't even call in on consecutive days, it would be on a Tuesday, then work Wednesday, then call in again on Thursday. Hell he wasn't even slick enough to do the Monday & Friday, long weekend sick deal.

Problem was I was having a real hard time finding someone that would stick around long enough. Now granted it was an entry level position with the pay to match, but hell when you're straight outta high school & not going to college, it was still pretty good. Anyway I kept him around longer than I should have just due to the fact I didn't want to spend the time searching for another kid & train them again. I finally had to shitcan him though as after work one night I stopped into the mall to do some shopping on the way home & low & behold, who did I run into laughing & joking with a bunch of his friends? The kid who called in sick 8 1/2 hours earlier with laryngitis & a sore throat. I did wait until the following Friday to do it though as I didn't want to embarrass him in front of his girlfriends. When he looked up & saw me walking by his face went red as a beet. I just nodded, smiled & said "see 'ya at work tommorow Jeffery" & kept walking.

Speaking of bathrooms Ports, this sob disappears daily into the bathroom. They have clocked him being in there an hour. Bastard is playing damn Vidga-games on his phone.

And he graduated from a pretty good private college and then got and MBA.

Sob cannot follow up with a customer but he can run a damn NCAA tournament bracket

Damn Four, why didn't you mention this last month?

I wouldn't have minded getting in on that action.

How much did you win?
