Went back to the same venue in Buckhead/Atlanta, The Improv.  The same two local guys opened and they did the same exact routines as a month ago when I saw Kevin Nealon.  Material you don't like the first time is worse the second.

Fred Stoller, an old Seinfeld writer and Everybody Loves Raymond actor, is the opener Norm travels with.  He's perfect for Norm because he's very low-key and you couldn't have a high-energy guy jumping around the stage followed by Norm.  He was good, mostly self-deprecating stuff but referenced literally everything he'd ever done prior to this.  He's either got a very good act or he really has spent a lot of money on therapy over the years. In contrast, Norm referenced nothing of his past and only made a sly "finger-licking good" comment about somebody eating wings in the front.

Norm finally came on and was onstage for over 2 hours. It was the longest I'd ever seen a comedian take the stage for. At first, we both thought he was drunk (it was the later show) and he was really slurring his words and was slow. About 15 minutes in and drinking a coke he sort of got his bearings, and didn't really have a set routine as he riffed a lot and has so much depth of material and experience that he could get away with it. Whereas Kevin Nealon a month ago is very tight and professional on-stage, Norm appears to be your funniest of friends just there to entertain.  He had several memorable bits, including getting philosophical and looking backwards, forwards and in the present, but finally blaming it on taking acid before coming onstage; talking about how dogs unconditionally love their owners, including Hitler; and even managed to weave in how downs  syndrome children are always happy while the rest of the world is miserable. I can see the last being something that does not go over well with many people but he did manage to tackle the topic without it being a complete dumpster fire. Just surprised he would even tackle it.

In short, if you have a chance to see him, it's well-worth it.

I saw him on the NBC comic reality show this summer. He looks plastic to me.

He didn't look very good, but his act was.

Long time ago he did a "segment" on The Larry Sanders Show in which he talked about homeless people having dogs. He said that for the dog it was like going on the longest walk ever and that they would think to themselves, "I could be doing this by myself!" Did he recycle those lines for this act?

The dog bit only revolved around a dog's unconditional love of it's owner, and that there was a dog that would be totally excited to see Hitler.

He also did a bit on Archie and Jughead and how he considers the comic to be about Jughead, not Archie. Only Norm would use that for material.
