When you go in for a dental cleaning, it's been my experience my entire life that the hygenist scrapes plaque off as a "standard cleaning". It's been that way for the three dentists I've seen in my 48 years, all excellent.

I had to go to a new one due to fucking insurance, recommended by my private insurance broker who uses this particular practice himself.  The new place's hygenist (who I visited yesterday with my kids) told me I had "bacteria" and other deep plaque issues, which sounded pretty bizarre. My teeth are not pretty, but they're 100% healthy as I've been diligent in always keeping my dental appointments.  Further, I was raised by a hygenist so I always was able to get in to the dentist the day I asked (I'm waiting to talk to my aunt about this). I ask what they mean about the "Plaque and bacteria" , and they tell me it's an additional $350 for this "deep cleaning".  I tell them I just want a "standard cleaning".  They refuse. I figure I'm already screwed because this is the "one allowed" checkup per six months as is standard in dental insurance policies. They tell me they can only do one-side of my mouth per visit, it will take two with the following next week, and it's $175 for this visit for the "deep clean".  So, stuck in that position, I accept very reluctantly.

They proceed to "numb my mouth" and scrape no differently than any previous hygenist had ever done to me. As a matter of fact, they actually spent less time than my previous dental hygenist/office on my teeth.  They used a different instrument to go along the gumline but that was about it.  I feel like I was completely ripped off.

To compound the situation, they took x-rays of my girls. They tell me both kids (including the 13-year old) need their wisdom teeth out now. I can see her older sister having that issue-I had mine out myself when I was 20 (on the day that Tyson killed Spinks!) but a 13 year old?  These guys seem like complete scam artists.

What do you guys think?

The tricky thing will be getting them to release the xrays but I believe they have to by law.  I'll just ask for the copies electronically telling them my ex needs to see them.

I've been to several different dentist in my lifetime (probably around 10, maybe more), and, while the majority (80% or more) seemed very honest and legitimate, in my experience, some practices treat their business like a opportunity to upsell and peddle procedures that were not at all necessary.  I can usually pick these guys out relatively quickly, and if that's the case, I typically find myself a new dentist.

Sounds like you've got yourself one of those dentists.  The fact that they refused to give you a standard cleaning (what reason did they give for this?) and effectively held you hostage there until you gave in should be a huge red flag.

I have been charged for a deep cleaning in the past too, only once and several years ago. That doesn't mean it's necessarily legit, but it exists.

DFG-they used words like "Bone loss" and "bacteria". We all have bacteria in our mouths and plaque certainly is, but this is the first time I've ever heard those terms. I call bullshit on "bone loss". My teeth are perfectly healthy.

Steve-glad I"m not the only one but did they charge you more for that?

They charged me more but it's been a while so I don't remember the details.  I don't think I would've agreed to anything close to $350, but it might depend on your insurance.  I also don't remember having to twice for it, but it's possible.

As an aside I find Vets are like this in almost every case too.
Wisdom teeth are a tricky one as they develop at different rates and times for everyone so a 13 year old needing them out, while that does sound fishy, it's not impossible in my book. People are growing faster and weirder these days.
I had mine out when I was between 19-22, three separate trips as they erupted. Wasn't put under. I imagine getting put under is a costly thing for those but I dunno.

These folks "number" teeth, which I found really odd.  I actually was prodded by my ex to check this practice out 13 years ago when she was referred by a friend, and they turned me off immediately.  They were filled with metrosexuals and model-types looking to put veneers on and whatnot. I've got a chipped front tooth that can't hold the cap properly so I'd forgotten about it (old hockey issue originally and later continually busted off due to stupid things like hitting it the wrong way on a beer bottle in a bar in Hoboken, Atlanta, my house, etc...).  They immediately tried to sell me everything under the sun. I left the place without so much as finishing.

I did not put 2 and 2 together that this was the same place as the practice had different staff and a different name, but it was in the same exact spot.  Fucking A!
