I never heard of this until binging the TV series “The Americans”. When I looked it up, it turns out Reagan was even watching and wanted to de-escalate tensions after that movie.
I remember it. Was quite a thing at the time, and it's airing was hyped accordingly.

Strange that I don’t remember it at all. I was watching plenty of TV at the time, but have no recollection of even a commercial for this one.

Similar to this though, I’ll mention the “Roots” miniseries, which people still talk about 40 years later.

The Iranian embassy siege in London. I remember it being live on telly but was too young to appreciate what was going on.

The Day After was a very big event.  In his diary Reagan was not complimentary of the movie and its intent.  I think he wrote that it was very chilling but that it wasn't going to make it any easier to lessen the prospects of a nuclear exchange actually happening.

The O.J. chase is the first one that jumps out, because you didn't know how it was going to end.  If you haven't seen it, the ESPN 30 For 30 episode titled June 17th, 1994 is great viewing.  No narration, no plot, just a series of news clips from that day, morning to night.  It's incredible how many massive things were happening in the sports world on that day, all of them overshadowed by the chase that evening.

I remember Reagan being shot.

The Cheers finale was a big one for me. They actually filled the Skydome and showed it on the big screen.

I remember Charles and Dianas wedding being big and being forced to watch it because my mom wanted to watch it.

I don't remember watching this, but of course remember the hysteria behind Who Shot JR ?

I think I’ve told this story before, but this is one of my first vivid memories, but not for the reason it was for anyone else. I was 3, a few months shy of 4, almost exactly the same age my son is now. A Bugs Bunny Easter special was supposed to air that night. I can’t remember ever liking Bugs Bunny that much, but for some reason I was really looking forward to this one. I remember clutching the clipping for this show from TV Guide in my hand all day.  It’s crazy how well I remember it all. And then of course, Reagan was shot and there was wall-to-wall coverage of it all night on every channel. That fucking special never did air and I was so pissed.

I remember it well. It was a media obsession and it was just everywhere.

I wasn't into this by any means, but Luke and Laura's Wedding on General Hospital. I remember my mom watched it, and it was a "thing" back in 1980 or '81 or whenever it happened.

It’s amazing how popular soaps were in the early to mid ‘80s. I remember Days of Our Lives used to do elaborate summer storylines involving travel to exotic locations and good TV special effects for the time. I never thought about how much they must’ve been raking in to justify the expense of all that. That stopped 30 years ago and now it’s a genre that’s almost completely dead. They’ve all been canceled except maybe 2 of them and I can’t imagine those will survive much longer. Weird to see an entire genre of TV disappear.

I didn't see it live but they kept on showing it on the local news...Budd Dwyer's suicide.

Was Luke and Laura’s wedding on a boat, and then they had a fight and the curly haired guy (I believe Luke), had a bleeding lip and then was knocked over the side of of the boat and into the water? If so, I remember that pretty clearly. I remember My mom and my aunt watching (and me being forced again to watch it. About a year later we got a second tv which was a life saver)

I have no idea. The one thing I remember is that Luke raped someone, maybe Laura or someone before her, and then they turned him babyface. Even 40 years ago, that was really controversial and people were really upset by that writing after that wedding got so over. Imagine today...

3 words perfectly describe this for the early 1980s

"Who shot J.R.?"
