Only 50 years old. Columbian coppers think it may be a drug overdose. I thought the guy was a phenomenal drummer. I like the Foo Fighters a lot as a band even though I hate Grohl's constant mugging and aw shucks persona he puts forward. Taylor was a good balance to that. Great singer also. I didn't know he got his start drumming for Alannis on the Jagged Little Pill tour. It will be hard to replace him because his vocals were a big part of the FF's sound. I only saw the Foo Fighters once. That was in Central Park in 2012 at the Global Citizen Festival lib circle jerk. It was an abbreviated set but they still came across to me as a band that would have been just as huge in the 70's as they were back then and even now. RIP Taylor Hawkins.

I wonder if Foo Fighters will even continue after this. They can't just replace Hawkins with another drummer, even a great drummer, because his singing was a big part of the band's sound and their live performances. Whenever Foo Fighters had a guest legend perform with them, Grohl always wanted to play drums with his heros, so Hawkins would sing. If you read Grohl's book, he described Hawkins as his soul mate. I don't think you can replace that 27 year relationship. RIP

They played "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" with Neil Young at the end. Fun time. Also saw them at IZOD Center (the old Meadowlands) in 2008 and I have tickets to see them at Citi Field this July if it still happens. I mentioned in the Dead Pool thread that I was a big fan of Hawkins going back to the Alanis days. I don't remember all the details and I could be wrong, but I think "Jagged Little Pill" basically used a drum machine. For the live tour, especially after that album became a worldwide phenomenon, they wanted to surround her with good musicians. Hawkins transformed generic drumming into a some really good stuff that added a lot to the songs. He had a rock star vibe even back then, as a mostly unknown member of a pop singer's backing band, and I knew who he was when Grohl chose him for Foo Fighters and was happy for him. My wife and I caught the 25th anniversary show of "Jagged Little Pill" at Jones Beach last summer (postponed from 2020) and I was hoping Taylor would make a surprise appearance for at least one song if he was around any of the same towns she went to, but obviously he didn't.

I don't think you can replace that 27 year relationship. It's a good question and it will be tough, musically and personally. But let's face it, Foo is way too big to not continue because the drummer died. I know Grohl has all the money in the world, but it won't end because of this. Grohl, Hawkins, and Smear were basically the band and all had such a longstanding relationship (Smear going back to the days when he was the Jimmy Garvin of Nirvana) , but as long as Grohl breaths, this band will go out there and be the face of rock in the 21st century. They won't even be allowed not to, they're too big. They're booked t headline festivals all summer, plus their own headlining stadium tour, so I think they'll cancel shows for 6 weeks and figure out how to continue in May. I can't even imagine the insurance nightmare and how much Live Nation would lose for all this to go away right after Covid wiped out 2 years.

Elton John dedicated “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” to Hawkins at his concert last night, which is pretty cool because you wouldn’t have expected John of all people to do that. He called Hawkins “one of the nicest people you could ever meet.”

TMZ reporting that Foo Fighters touched down in L.A. this morning. They had some weasel taking pics on the tarmac of the emotional scene as the band were met by their managers and other associates and cried and hugged. They have officially cleared their schedule for a month and next have April 29 on the agenda where they’re headlining the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis with everyone from Lil Wayne to Smashing Pumpkins to Van Morrison also on the bill, so we’ll see if they make that date.
