Goodfellas is probably my favourite film. Definite top 5.

He wasn't a huge star but he was usually very good and very intense, and he was in a few other really good films. I mentioned Narc in the Dead Pool thread-great film from about twenty years ago and one of his best performances.

RIP

Goodfellas was simply great.

He looked rough for his age. I know he was a smoker. Not sure if he was a partier.

Liotta did some crap the past 20 years but I consider him just shy of an A-lister whose movies in the ‘90s were must-see for me. Even stuff that I probably would’ve passed on with anyone else, like “Unlawful Entry”, I watched and enjoyed because of him. And “Goodfellas” and “Field of Dreams” are simply iconic and to get 2 of those in a career is a hell of an accomplishment. The last thing I saw him in was The Sopranos prequel movie last year and I know some hated it but I enjoyed it and thought he was fantastic playing both Moltisanti twins. Just tremendous work.

He looked to me like he'd had a lot of plastic surgery in the last 10-15 years.

I thought the Soprano film was shit but some of the performances were very good including Liotta.

There's a pretty good Stephen Soderbergh movie from last year called No Sudden Move. He has a small role and it's worth checking out.

Unlawful Entry is a good shout too. Trashy stuff but he's great in it.

Everyone is mentioning Copland - I remember being disappointed with it when it came out. I rewatched it when we were in lockdown and thought it was very good and Liotta shone in a cast of all stars.

Another great cast is Heartbreakers- a lot of fun.

He seemed to be involved in better stuff the last few years after at least a decade in the wilderness of straight-to-video stuff. A real loss.

I watched Unlawful Entry for the first time in honor of Ray Liotta, and he definitely played a very Ray Liotta character.

RIP

If you ever get a chance watch a movie with Ray called Something Wild with Jeff Daniels. It was before Goodfellas. It may have been his first movie. He stole the movie as the bad guy. He was so cool in that movie.

Very good call. Think you're right that it was his first film. I haven't seen it in 25 years but will check it out again soon.

I mentioned the film in my obit in the Dead Pool but not the specifics. “Something Wild” was basically his first starring role in 1986 and he got a Golden Globe nomination for it as well as a bunch of other honors. It definitely jump-started his career and was very well-received at the time, but it’s been mostly forgotten to history now, although it has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a comedy but Liotta plays an ex-con who winds up dead in a knife fight so it’s still on brand for him and maybe helped him get noticed by Scorcese. Prior to that movie, he hadn’t done much other than appearing on the soap opera “Another World” and much smaller roles in made-for-TV movies.

Been re-watching some old Ray Liotta movies like Something Wild and Goodfellas, and one thought that came to me was too bad he didn't take the role of Joker that Tim Burton actually offered him before giving it to Jack Nicholson. His natural, sinister laughter would have been perfect for role. And he also bears a strong resemblance to the other guy who played Joker, Joaquin Phoenix.

Watched Something Wild last night. I'd forgotten nearly all of it. It's a real oddball film with great performances and a really good soundtrack. Liotta is brilliant in it.
