missouri state championship

mid-atlantic championship

florida championship

georgia state championship

any others?

it seems like each of these champions would get a shot at the world belt when it passed  through the big cities in the territory, which is one reason i think the nwa was really cool in the late 70s-early 80s

i guess the most coveted of these belts depends on your allegiance to which territory...they were all great but i used to think the mid-atlantic champion carried a little more weight than the others- although all my knowledge came from the apter mags back then

I liked the Southern Heavyweight Title and the North American Heavyweight title from Florida and Mid-South.

When I was a kid, I always thought that the American Heavyweight Champion was the belt to have because Race and Flair always defended going through Texas semi-regularly and would also send canned interviews to them regarding upcoming World Title matches.

Missouri State.  The stepping stone to the NWA World title and St. Louis always seemed like an All-Star promotion with guys from all over the country coming in, so if you were the top guy there, you were the best.

You know thats not really true about the Missouri State title being a stepping stone to the NWA strap even though it is the common perception. Only Harley Race and Terry Funk held the title BEFORE winning the NWA strap. Backlund held it also before winning the WWWF title. Quite a few ex-NWA champs held it but it was always after their title run.

My personal favorite was the Central States belt centered around Bob Geigel and Pat O'Conner's promotion out of Kansas City.  I suppose the best to ever come out of that territory was Harley Race who won his first NWA title from Dory Funk Jr. on a Central States card.

One of the beauties of the territories in the pre-cable days is that, in reviewing results from that time period, it is obvious that guys who were main event great in Kansas City turned into prelim stumblebums during the drive east to St. Louis.  But you'd never know it unless you had simultaneous access to both markets and nobody had an antenna that tall.

Didn't Flair hold the Missouri title between NWA title reigns 1 and 2? Not technically the same thing it he did, of course....

The Missouri title as the steppingstone was always something I saw as an Apter mag creation, personally.

I didn't know Dick Slater held the Missouri title, as noted earlier.

Patera's Missouri title win actually exists on film, which is pretty cool. If I remember right, he actually gets Kevin Von Erich to submit to the full nelson/swinging neckbreaker for the victory (either that or VE passes out...hard to tell without sound or commentators).

Patera seemed like the most dominant wrestler going when he won the IC and then Missouri so close together. I thought he was a lock to get the NWA or WWF title at some point.

Yes, Flair held the belt in mid '83. As I remember it was like part of the whole Flair-Race feud build up to the Starrcade '83 match.

Slater held the belt for six months '77 into '78.

Mid Atlantic for me.

Another subtopic would be what happened to these belts.

The Georgia belt became the National Heavyweight belt and was merged with (I think) the US championship ?

Never seen that much NWA before 84...But I loved the JCP's NWA World TV Championship.....The Battles between Dusty and Tully just made it seem like it was the title to have.
