That's pretty fucked, even for a worked magazine.

You gotta put Cena at #1 at this point.

Right now he is on the shelf after his freak fishing pier accident. But don't worry Mar Cash fans he will be back stinking up a ring near you soon.

That's right... I hope that fishing pier was ranked #2 behind AJ Styles.

I guess PWI is still mad that the WWE shut them out of their events to give WWE mag photographers the best access

It's to their benefit to keep the entire industry strong and promote non-WWE guys (since WWE is more than capable of promoting their own guys).  They have gotten a lot more shooty and smarky in recent years, but very rarely trash the industry as a whole and don't even go after WWE that much because you can't say something sucks and then expect people to pay $6 to read about it.  They treat TNA and even ROH like they're on the same level as WWE to make the industry look stronger than it is right now.

It's also entirely possible that mwtapes is the new Editor-in-Chief of PWI.

I remember how I felt when Dean Malenko was named the No. 1 wrestler. Kind of a similar feeling. I will cop to buying the PWI 500 every year. I like to read about all the up and coming indy wrestlers and the old-timers still hanging on..

This right here ^^ makes the most sense from a business perspective. You gotta figure if all the other companies went out of business and only WWE was left then the Victory Sports series wrestling magazines would essentially be out of business due to the fact that WWE has their own magazine(s) and most fans would probably go right to the source (WWE Magazine) to get their news other than going to PWI and it's sister mags.

I miss reading the Apter mags myself. It's been about 17 years at least since I've bought one, although I did buy an almanac about 13/14 years ago. I try reading them at the newsstand sometimes in recent years, but I just can't get into them like yesteryear. The death of the territories basically took any interest I had reading them away. I think the main reason was that I was able to get all the info from wrestlers and territories that I couldn't see regularly on TV. So then when it just became WCW and WWF I lost interest as I was able to watch both territories' TV shows every week and watch their monthly PPVs also. I didn't need to rely on PWI for news anymore and add to the fact it was about this time that I became "smartened up" about the backstage goings on when I had access to Cody Boyns' "Wrestling Wrap" telephone hot-line free basically. It didn't cost nothing to listen to it every week as it wasn't a 1-900 number and also wasn't long distance either. I also became aware of The Wrestling Observer and The Torch also as Boynes got the majority of his information from them...which he fully credited btw.
Basically there wasn't a need for the Apter mags anymore. Plus the price of them started going up and it wasn't as if I was a kid anymore and plastering color posters of Ivan Koloff, Angelo Mosca, The Great Kabuki, Bob Backlund, Dusty Rhodes, etc all over my bedroom walls.
I should mention that I was a pretty big fan of the "Napolitano Mags" as a kid too. His mags always had the best(and bloodiest)photos, both in color and in black and white IMO. George Napolitano never gets enough credit IMO. He was and is a great photographer. Actually I think him AND Bill Apter should be in the WWE HOF or one of the pro wrestling HOFs anyway.

As far as A.J. Styles listed at #1 in the PWI 500 this year?
That is who I guessed as being number one when I first saw this thread posted. He was World Champ for quite awhile this year and really hit his peak of being THE TOP GUY I think in that same time frame. Remember, Cena wasn't on top a lot of the time and he did lose the title to Sheamus...I mean come on...In a Kayfay sort of way that is.

*Edit*** Oh, and did Mar Cash actually make the PWI 500 list during any year yet or are you guys just goofing on him?
I can see him sending an autographed copy of his "book" to Stu Saks and expecting a top fifty placing in return.
Imagine he did make the list and spelled his name as Mar Cash. Actually Sin that would be a good troll wouldn't it?
Lobby PWI next year to get Mar on the list. Get everyone here at S&W to send e-mails nominating him, but find some way to make sure they spell his name as Mar Cash. And in the little spiel beside his name, have them put that his ranking number was "due to all the hard work he has put in over the last couple of years in making his message board "Glory Hole Of Wrestling" the success it is today."

Mar Cash was in the PWI 500 at least once in the 1990s.  I still have one of the issues, and he even has a picture in it.  They didn't mention the thong sales, though.
