Razor Ramon could have been Wrestlecrap, but Scott Hall made it work. Funny how he's the opposite of Paul Birchill in how Vince thought Scott was a genius for coming up with the gimmick since he never saw Scarface.

I think the Million Dollar Man was cheesy.  I don't think Ted DiBiase made it any less corny.  I could tell he was acting.  Curt Hennig was so good, I didn't think he was acting.  Most gimmicks that are given to wrestlers before the fans know them as that character are cheesy to me.  It was pretty easy for HHH, The Rock, and Stone Cold to be who they were and they probably didn't have to work hard at the character part.  I'm assuming there was something in Ric Flair that made somebody see 'Nature Boy' in him, so I don't think he had to work hard.

Other guys could have looked foolish trying to portrait perfection.  You had to get the job done on the mic, in the ring, and just be cool the whole time.  It's hard for me to put into words because I'm going off of memory.  I don't watch that period of WWF through DVDs so I haven't seen it in a while.  I have a tendency to think a lot of things are corny.  I could be overstating how well he played that character.

An opposing example for me would be Shawn Michaels.  He's one of my all time favorite wrestlers, but he was corny to me in the 90s.  I thought he was great in the ring and on the mic, but the way he personified his character wasn't for me.  Maybe it was on purpose, but I think you get more heat for being cool than for being corny.  Saying 'I don't get how a guy who's really good at a lot of different things and is arrogant is cheesy' would be like saying 'what's cheesy about a guy who thinks he's hot and gets chicks' to me.  It's not.  HBK was cheesy because he did a striptease everytime he came to the ring.

Perhaps it was the extensive drug use, but Nick Dinsmore played mental defective Eugene to a T.

I was going to say the Undertaker hands down, but Evil Doink gives him a run.

Yeah, the more I think about it, Matt Borne as Evil Doink may be the king of this category. An Evil wrestling clown is a goofy a gimmick as it gets, yet Borne was great in the role and could get fans into it that would have otherwise sneered at it (myself included).

And again, I think Kimala is close in the running. As several others have mentioned, Undertaker is in the running too. those may be my top 3 for best jobs of getting over goofy gimmicks.

Kimala is one of my personal favorites. I loved the belly slaps. He had a really good run against Hogan too in the WWF.

Yeah, had Borne stayed as Evil Doink for another year or so, they could have teamed him with Crazy Bob Backlund.
