I remember in 1987 at the height of Hulk Hogan's popularity, he came on, did a three-minute spiel about how we're all champions, and how we all needed to go to the phones and help the special little Hulksters, and ten minutes later they had raised another million dollars.

Or as Hogan told it, they raised 100,000,000 dollars, and Jerry personally asked him to take the torch and be the new face of the MDA, but Hogan was too busy slamming 2000 pound giants and headlocking Verne Gagne into submission to accept.

Hogan does embellish, but in 1987, he was a walking goldmine.

When Lewis has either passed on or is no longer able to do the telethon, I wonder if a successor is in place?

Yeah, I know that is morbid as hell but you have to wonder if Jerry has someone in mind. For the MDA'd sake, at least.

It dies when Jerry does. This kind of long-form telethon is mostly obsolete because stations don't want to clear that kind of time. They can make money with Sham Wow infomericals overnight.

MDA will move to a different form of fund raising.

I dont think so...it will go on, and probably get updated w/better/more current mainstream acts.....it wont "all of a sudden" die when he does. I think they have things in place for that time.

Probably just as well. The stars of Hollywood seem more interested in supporting causes with a political bent anyway. It doesn't help that the stars and talent of today don't seem capable or inclined to ad lib and entertain for hours in the telethon format like Lewis has done for all these years. Maybe he chose all those Vegas acts with good reason?

Yeah, most of these fucking Hollywood imbeciles want dough, just for showing up. Unless it's the "cool/in" thing to do...which, at this time, apparently, it's not.

You'll NEVER see any of these shitty rappers on there, they want $$$. I will say, I do think he continues catering to the "geritol generation", and, eventually, it's going to come crashing down on him.

PS, I'd like to punch Jann Karl in the face...I hate that bitch.

PSS, someone,  ANYONE, please...put Norm Crosby out to pasture once and for all? I caught about a minute of his standup...he was atrocious, and looks like he's dead. Then, again, so did Barry Manilow.

It won't go on. The TV business has changed radically and all telethons are disappearing. This one endures because of the Jerry Lewis tradition. As it is, more stations are only carrying part of it or shunting off big parts of it to their cable channels. It doesn't make economic sense for stations to give away big parts of air time for this show. Once Jerry is gone, they'll dump it without a second thought.

I watchyed about an hour, no stars on except for Jerry Lewis.  Was confused by the total when Lowes, Safe Way, the Fire Fighters Union and someone elese gave $53,000,000 combined how was the total only $58,000,000??  Or do they only count on their big vboard phone called in donations?

I remember lots more going on during the telefon when I was a kid.  I think Jerry Lewis really still cares about the cause and his crying is real and not staged but for the hour we had it on only had a military singing group on, they need more entertainment to keep people watching.

You saw the very end, which is geared to the big check presentations and final pitches.

Preceding hours are more entertainment-oriented, but even that is a losing battle. Because of audience fragmentation, an Ed Sullivan-styled variety format that tries to have something for everyone isn't viable. I don't know if they have demographic breakdown on viewers, but I would guess it skews very old.

I heard this morning that the show ended with Tony Orlando doing a Led Zeppelin cover.  Seriously.  That's gotta be trainwreck good.  Anyone have a link?

That's a hell of a good point.  When the telethon started, many acts still had a traceable lineage of the craft of entertainment back to vaudeville--- i.e., variety entertainment designed to entertain audiences for hours on end--- that is lost today.

maybe they can do it on a webcam and people text in the pledges.  For entertainment they have Glen Beck and Ed Shultz shout at each other, followed by a long documentry on the history of MDA, followed by Miley Cyrus and taylor Swift rapping with the Black eyed Peas, and then a reality show where kids with MD live in a house together on a remote desert island and have to cook for Gordan ramsey.  Thats very today
