In chronological order:

Bobby Kennedy being assassinated.

The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrating upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere

9/11

I was only 4 when Bobby was murdered, but I remember that all of my TV programs were replaced by sad music and a picture of a man.  I figured that he must be important if he took Rex Trailer and Bozo off the air-so I started to comb my hair like his.  Years later I realized just who it was that I had watched and wondered about on that day.

The Space Shuttle was just so ironic.  I had been driving state-to-state that Sunday and remember clearly that the NPR newscasters had mentioned that it was a slow news day. The only item of note was that Columbia was scheduled to return to earth.

After a quick bite a a quick nap, I turned on the radio to hear wall-to-wall coverage of the disaster.

9/11?  I was teaching in class and the whole day-hell the entire Semester went right down the tubes.  The kids were scared and shocked.  parenbts were frantic-far worse than any other time that I can recall.  I had been in worse places and seen worse things around the world...so my reaction was less emotive.  But for the majority of kids and their folks (most of whom had never left New England-much less the Continental United States) it was total chaos.  Just sad.

Challenger Disaster-We had just moved to Germany and Mom and Dad took us to the NCO Club to eat. My English teacher was there so I went up to say hi. She shushed me and pointed at the TV as the explosion had just happened.

9-11 Tragedy-I was home with my two youngest Daughters, one aged two months and one that was a few days from turning three. I had just changed out of my work clothes, fed the 3 year old and had just gotten the 2 month old down for a nap. My Brother called me and told me someone had bombed the World Trade Center and I instantly though, again? Turned it to CNN and they talked about a plane hitting one of the towers and then the second plane hit.

March 6, 2008-My best friend's name is Teddy Faucheaux. I met him when we lived in Central New York 20 years ago. He is my brother in just about every sense of the word, save the fact there is no shared blood between us. He is Uncle Teddy to my kids and I am Uncle Chad to his girls. His 5 year old Daughter, whom I considered and refer to as my niece died this day. She died from septic shock brought on by E Coli. I was there with Teddy and his Wife throughout this whole ordeal. It absolutely killed me to see this child hooked up to machines as her extremities turned black, with her face and arms puffy and swollen. It was so hard, because Madison was such an active kid that loved to climb and ride her bike. The Doctors had hoped she might pull through with some amputations, but sadly it seems she was brain dead as soon as this happened. Teddy and Jessica are good people, and good parents. I still struggle with how something like this could happen to such good people. My Wife and I consider them family, and there is a gaping hole in our hearts. The grace and dignity Ted and Jessica showed really inspired me to appreciate my blessings, and to make sure those I love know that I do.  Some good did come from this tragedy. There was a shortage of blood in New Orleans and when this story made the news so many donated blood in Madison's name. They said it was the first time in 15 years New Orleans had a surplus of blood.

August 16 - 1977
- putting a puzzle together with my Grandma when CKGM ( radio station out of Montreal ) announced that Elvis Presley had died.

December 8 - 1980
- watching Benny Hill on TV with my CEGEP roommates ( Lennoxville, Quebec )  when they broke in with the news about John Lennon's assassination.

September 11 - 2001
- housesitting for friends ( Judy and Alain ) that were on their honeymoon. I had worked really long hours the day before on a movie set and so I slept in until about 3 pm. When I turned on the TV I could not immediately figure out why every channel was showing footage of burning buildings, etc. Once I knew just what had happened I watched CNN for the rest of the day.

Challenger: I was home sick from school, watching TV in my parents' bedroom. My mom was in the kitchen making me lunch and I told her that the shuttle blew up. She thought I was just watching the boosters/fuel tank fall off (also I was like 7 and she just figured I didn't see what I thought I saw). She came in expecting to have to explain what I saw, and then as soon as she saw the replay she realized I was right.

1989 Earthquake: I was watching the pre game show, and saw what everyone sees on YouTube of Al Michaels saying "we're having an earth-" before getting cut off when the stadium lost power.

OJ: I was in my graphic arts class in high school, and we were listening on the radio. My class was about 50-50 black and white so it was a little awkward.

O.J. runs from police in the Bronco - Vacationing in Savannah. It was the last day of a week-long trip to Washington DC and a few Civil War sites. The folks I sat on the edge of a Holiday Inn with a road atlas, tracking where he was.

9/11 - Have told that story already.

Princess Diana - Dad and I had gone to see Georgia play Arkansas State. Got home just when the news broke on TV. All of us sat around a cheap little Sylvania television in their bedroom, watching as the reports got worse.

These three exactly for me too.  I would also add the Challenger explosion.  Like sek69, I was home sick from school that day in my PJs.  My mom was watching it downstairs and I was upstairs playing.  She shrieked and I ran downstairs to see what was wrong.

9-11...was at work...remember that day vividly.

Challenger blowing up...we were out of school that day, watched it live..

Tornado hitting here about a quarter mile from our house, I was a senior in HS, 1989. Working at the pizza place, my mom called, said the entire neighborhood (which isn't like a real neighborhood, it was all the houses on the road above our house) was gone, called to tell me they were on the way to go get my brother, he was on a Boy Scouts camping trip. I came home, they had the road blocked off about 7 miles from our place, I told them I lived down there and they let me through..that tornado ran like a 20 mile path right through where I live. Literally was a war zone. Killed I think 7 people, 4 of them were family friends. I'll never forget driving by the store that my dad used to take us to every Saturday to get a Coke and a candy bar for my brother and myself while he shot the breeze with his friend that ran it...store was GONE..never forget that night..

9/11:

2nd year in college. I had 2 early classes back-to-back, so I am walking along to get some lunch and meeting up with a friend. People are huddled around a TV in the Student Union, I pay no mind to it. Sat down with some Chinese food as everyone walked around eerily. There were campus police talking on walkie talkies. In the line at the Chinese place, the Chinese employees were standing in a line with sad looks on their faces. I finally learn what happened as I am swallowing a delicious meal of Sesame chicken. The radio that would play overhead in there was announcing about everything that had already happened. This was at about 11 am.

OJ:

I was in a study hall in 8th grade and the guy in charge had the radio on with the verdict.

Desert Storm on a Sunday afternoon:

I don't remember what day it was, but it was maybe the first full day after it started? Anyway, the Bills were clobbering the Raiders to head to the Super Bowl and I remember a house full of people practically rioting that they were switching to war coverage during the shining moment of glory. I was 8 years old.

Lennon assassination. I was playing with Tonka trucks in the living room, the report came on and my mom yelled oh shit and started crying. She was a big fan.

9/11. Friend of the family called and woke us up.

89 SF quake. I turned on the TV to find Roseanne on instead of the world series. WTF
