The thing that made Crockett's TV so cool at this time was that it was mainly a way to get folks out to see the matches that claw has just listed here.  You could see almost any of the matches including the prelims on TV just before it would come to your town.  I saw a lot of the spot shows in Rocky Mount, NC as a youngster (I was 12 in 1974) and even a preliminary match like Flair v. Les Thatcher would be on TV and then the "rematch" would be at the Rocky Mount Ballpark.   The television was very well thought out up and down the card.  There was rarely a squash at this time unless it was to set up a "save" that created a new feud between a new heel and an established face.

I may not remember the decision exactly right but I know that one of the best early Flair matches I ever saw was Flair v. Jack Brisco in Rocky Mount.  I can't remember if Brisco was NWA champ at the time but I believe the match ended in a 45 minute time limit draw.  They continued on after the bell for another 20 minutes or so with flair taking these really sick face first bumps all over the outfield as well as in the mud around the bases.  It had rained earlier in the day and the field was very wet.

Anything further about Rice Lake?

I've halfway wondered if the date and place is a Apter mag creation. Flair's never been quoted as saying anything beyond Gadaski was his first opponent and that Verne finally admitted that it was fake five minutes before the match.

As for the name spelling, well over half of the AWA era clippings I've seen spell it without the 'k'. It is a bit odd that he was the only one who didn't use his given name coming out of camp. In fact, I can't think of any Gagne trainee who went by anything else (unless Blackjack Mulligan or Ole Anderson did).

Nature Boy: The earliest newspaper reference I've seen is from September 1975.

Three clippings ...

Detroit Lakes, MN (Mar 21 1973)

San Antonio, TX (June 13 1973)

I believe, but am not positive that this is a correction from June 6. Unless he faced Fargo twice in two weeks.

Ames, IA (May 3, 1974)

One his last AWA matches.

I have not heard back from the Rice Lake, Wisconsin library. They said it would be two weeks before they got back to me. I'll call them again next week.

Was the Rice Lake listing in Helwagen's original Flair record book?

It was. 'Course, I don't know the source of his information on that. I suspect RSPW.

Looking back at RSPW archives, Gary Will didn't have that date when someone posed the question in 1993. That leads me to believe that it hadn't been mentioned anywhere.

The date (obviously copped from somewhere) was first mentioned on RSPW in early 1995. Helwagen hung around the group at least some as he posted a couple of times in late 1995. The book itself was originally published in December of that year.

Vance's newest CD collection has some interesting stuff. Great collection of magazine articles. Occasionally, there'll be mentions of his beginnings:

May 1982 (legit interview with The Wrestling News) - States debut was January 1973 in Wisconsin and a 10 minute draw against Gadaski.

October 1986 (legit interview with Wrestling Eye) - Says 1973. "I started in Wisconsin and went to Louisiana, Oklahoma, Canada, and Hawaii. Finally, I settled down in the Mid-Atlantic area with Crockett Promotions."

No mention of Japan or Texas, but it looks like it's possible there are even more missing matches from 1972-74.

Perhaps the first mention of him being born in Memphis.

June 1989 (PWI or sister mag) - Listed as December 10, 1972 against Gadaski.

July 1990 (PWI) - Listed as early 1973.

It looks safe to assume that Flair doesn't know the date, but the parts about Gadaski, Wisconsin, and a draw are correct.

Though not many historical pieces on Flair's career appeared in Apter mags, it still looks a little suspicious that out of the blue a concrete date of December 10, 1972 appears.
