I'll take a look at St. Louis when I have time. I have the St. Louis record books and I think I've put everything from 1950 onward in my computer files. I don't think Charlotte or Tampa would come close despite running weekly because they didn't become NWA members until much later than Toronto or St. Louis. And the NWA Champion would only come to Charlotte and Tampa at certain times of the year where as Toronto and St. Louis were more regular stops for the champ. That speaks volumes for the power Muchnick and Tunney had within the Alliance. AC, Invite Gary here if you want. I know he's been very busy with his real life job the past few years and doesn't post much on message boards anymore. |

was thinking during Flairs early reigns would add on a lot for Charlotte or Richmond, Race & Rhodes in Florida also, as far as the relationships there is some great info on Tunney & Whipper in Tim Hornbaker's NWA history book haven't spoken to Gary in a while, he adds a lot of stuff to Wikipedia but haven't seen him on the boards |

New York is a possible also. Monthly WWWF title defenses by Sammartino/Graham/Backlund for over a decade. |

As for New York, I dont think MSG will hold the key for most title defenses. It will just tie with all the other big cites like Bostin, Philadelphia, Springfield, Baltimore and etc.. The Key will lie in the other cities. Such as Albany, NY. Or perhaps Portland, Bangor, Worcester, Poughkeepsie and such. Most do not realize that Albany, NY ran every other week. The rest of the cards above were running every 3 weeks. Sad thing is the results for those cities are not on the internet for all to see. I have been researching the above cities out hard for my Graham record book site, and have been going back in time to the early 70's, as best as I can with the time I have alloted to me on my trips. A good example would be this. Bob Backlund won the title on February 20, 1978. His appearances for the next two months in Albany is: March 3, 1978 Albany, NY March 17, 1978 Albany, NY April 14, 1978 Albany, NY April 28, 1978 Albany, NY March 31, 1978 Albany, NY - I forgot to research this date. It happens to all of us at times with long hours of researching and driving for hours to get somewhere. My next trip out I will get the information for that card. And the two December 1977 matches I missed that might have more Graham matches on, I also forgot. So if Bob was on the March 31 card, it would make 5 matches in 2 months. Where as he would only have 2 at MSG. Right now he has twice as many defenses built up in Albany. See my point on why MSG will not be the big key for the WWWF? Of course I am sure all the Charlotte and Norfolk cites are also not known. Last edited on Sun Oct 28th, 2007 07:36 pm by Ron |

AC, Where St. Louis gets the edge on other NWA cities is in the 1950s. St. Louis was in the National Wrestling Alliance from the very beginning plus champs like Thesz during his first title reign and O'Connor during his reign were based in St. Louis. And Muchnick was the boss/Prez for so many years. It's a built in advantage none of the other NWA cities had. |

On my website, I've got a page that has all the world title match cards listed for Memphis,(1962-1984). I've included the AWA, NWA & WWWF. Feel free to check them out. http://www.marksfiles.com/worldtitle.html mj99 |

I've been a little lazy and haven't gotten around to adding the ones for 1985-89 yet, but i hope to in the future. It's listed under my main menu, look under "Matches", then "World Title Cards". I got "All", "1960's", "1970's" & "1980's". The ones by decades are for our bandwidth challenged friends (still on dial-up). I hope it helps, mj99 Great forum by the way! Welcome mj99. When it comes to Memphis, he is the man. If you have never visited his site, you've been missing out. He even published an excellent Memphis record book too. |

Thanks Chitown, I was amazed at all the wrestlers that came through Memphis in the 60's as well. I didn't start watching until the mid-70's and the research I did for my site opened up a whole new world for me. If you haven't seen them, I've got a couple of pages dedicated to both Lou Thesz and Gene Kiniski (local newspaper clippings, photos, etc) http://www.marksfiles.com/thesz.html http://www.marksfiles.com/kiniski.html I've also got some special pages dedicate to non-NWA champs as well. Goto my main menu, select "Misc", then click on "Special". Everyone is listed there. I've got a ton of stuff scanned from the original articles in the 1940's, 50's 60's, etc. There's also original pictures (no microfilm scans here.) Anyways, I hope you enjoy it. |

No problem. St. Louis and Toronto are two of the most interesting wrestling cities to me because they had so many guys from different promotions appear on their cards. Houston was like that for a time too but I haven't seen nearly the amount of research on Houston that I've seen on Toronto and St. Louis. On a personal note, Robert VanKavelaar is publishing another edition of Florida Mats Wars. It will cover the year 1980. I'm totally geeked out about getting a copy when RVK gets everything finished. I'll try to get RVK aka bunkhouse and Missin Gordon Solie here to post. |
